In the MLB World Series: The Los Angeles Dodgers produced a stunning fightback to beat the New York Yankees and clinch the World Series with a dramatic come-from-behind 7-6 win.

On a night of spellbinding drama at Yankee Stadium in New York, the Dodgers sealed their eighth Major League Baseball Championship title, after recovering from 5-0 down for a 4-1 series victory.

The Yankees, who had kept the series alive with an 11-4 rout in game four on Tuesday, had looked poised to take the series back to Los Angeles for game six, after home runs from Aaron Judge, Jazz Chisholm and Giancarlo Stanton.

But a catastrophic fifth innings by the Yankees, saw the Dodgers tie the score at 5-5.

Although the Yankees regained the lead in the sixth inning, the Dodgers hit back in the eighth to claim what turned out to be a winning 7-6 lead.

Kia ora, Talofa lava, Ma’lelei, Bula, Aloha and Welcome to Season 11 Episode 26 of Breakfast Bites, by TEIVOVOdigital.com – a wrap of Pasifika people’s sports news, on Wednesday morning 30 October 2024.

Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian, in the middle of the Blue continent, where it is a cool 21 degrees Celsius at 5am this morning.

In Rugby Union: Tests this weekend starts with Ireland hosting the Australian Wallabies on Friday, Scotland versus the Flying Fijians at Murrayfield and England out for revenge against the All Blacks at Twickenham. No Tonga and Samoa?

In Rugby League: Pacific Championships Round 3: New Zealand Kiwis vs Tonga on Saturday at Go Media Stadium, Auckland with just one change for Tonga - Sydney Roosters youngster Siua Wong added to the bench in place of Keaon Koloamatangi, who has left the squad to be with his partner, who is due to give birth.

In the Pacific Bowl: Papua New Guinea Kumuls vs Cook Islands Aitu on Sunday 4pm at Santos National Football Stadium, Port Moresby.

PNG Kumuls skipper Rhyse Martin will miss the game due to personal reasons, replaced in the second row by Dan Russell. Judah Rimbu starts at Hooker.

In Football: The Red Devils have moved quickly to settle on the man that they want to take charge, after the sacking of Erik10.

Sporting Lisbon FC has confirmed an approach from Man U for their Head Coach, Ruben Amorim.

In doing so, they also revealed that the Portuguese's contract includes a €10Million transfer fee.

Should Amorim complete the move to Old Trafford, he would be the tenth Manager since the retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson - David Moyes, Louis van Gaal, Jose Mourinho, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and the recently sacked Ten Hag have all had relatively short, unsuccessful spells, in charge.

In UFC: In the latest UFC rankings update, former No. 13 Khamzat Chimaev has jumped to No. 3, pushing Robert Whittaker down to No. 4.

So the Russian hit man sits below UFC Middleweight Champion Dricus Du Plessis, No. 1 contender Sean Strickland and No. 2 Israel Adesanya.

Chimaev has two options for his next fight: If Du Plessis rematches Strickland, Chimaev can fight for the No. 1 contender spot against Adesanya.

In the MLB World Series: No team has ever overcome a 0–3 deficit in the World Series, and the Yankees now face that daunting task.

Their struggles have been multifaceted, but the biggest issues stem from the lackluster performances of some of their star players.

The New York Yankees are just one loss away from a potentially humiliating outcome: being swept by the Los Angeles Dodgers.

With the Dodgers securing wins in the first three games, including in game 3 last night in the Bronx 4-2.

    Happy birthday Pita Driti!

Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian, in the middle of the Blue continent, where it is 22 degrees Celsius again at 5am this morning.

In Rugby: Did the Siva Tau backfire?

England thrashed Toa Samoa 18-34 in Wigan in the first of a two-Test series between the two nations.

The game had plenty of feeling stemming from Samoa’s traditional war dance, which saw the visitors’ get right into the faces of their opponents.

If anything, the passionate Siva Tau seemed to spur England on, who raced out to a 16-0 lead after 20 minutes

There was also a massive second half brawl.

In fact, should the Samoans, the Kiwis, the Tongans – in both rugby union, plus rugby league - and the Flying Fijians all follow the example of the Fiji Bati and do away with their traditional war dances and sing a song instead?

In Football: Manchester United has sacked Manager Erik ten Hag after dropping to a low 14th in the Premier League table after suffering their fourth loss in nine league games at West Ham on Sunday and have won only one of their last eight games in all competitions.

Ruud van Nistelrooy will take charge of the team as interim head coach, supported by the current coaching team, whilst a permanent head coach is recruited.

In the NFL: Super star Samoan Miami Dolphins Quarterback Tua Tagovailoa returned to the field last weekend, five weeks after suffering his third concussion in less than two years.

Tagovailoa threw for 234 yards and one touchdown. However, he was unable to secure the win for Miami after a last-second field goal lifted Arizona, 28–27.

“I’ve been preparing to play for five weeks while I was on IR,” Tagovailoa - the 2023 NFL passing leader said at the postgame press conference. “I’m just trying to avoid the big hits.”

Tagovailoa signed a four-year US$212.4Million deal that runs until 2028. If he retires, Tagovailoa would give up US$124M in guaranteed money.

In the MLB World Series: As expected, the 2024 World Series has been a gift for Fox and Major League Baseball.

The first two games of the series between the LA Dodgers and the New York Yankees averaged 14.5 million viewers across Fox networks, the most through two games since 2017, Fox announced.

Saturday’s game averaged 13.4m viewers and peaked at 16.4m, the most-watched Game 2 since Dodgers–Red Sox in 2018. The Fox audience was up 65% on Game 2 of the 2023 World Series.

The MLB World Series is now headed to New York, but with the Dodgers ahead 2–0, ticket prices for Games 3-5 in Yankee Stadium have dropped.

Despite the dip, the tickets are still some of the most expensive in World Series history.

    Happy birthday Mere Vasu!

Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian, in the middle of the Blue continent, where it is 22 degrees Celsius at 5am this morning.

In Netball: Australian netball great Nat Medhurst has delivered some brutal truths to the “shell shocked” Diamonds after the world champions coughed up the Constellation Cup to the Silver Ferns for just the third time in history – 41-63 in Perth yesterday.

In Rugby League: The Kangaroos prevailed in Christchurch with a 22-10 win over the Kiwis, in the Pacific Championships.

For Australia, hooker Harry Grant led the way and consistently schemed from behind the ruck, being supported by a host of big-name stars.

Meanwhile, for New Zealand, veteran Shaun Johnson showed he’s still got it, two months after he played his final NRL game.

Meanwhile, the Cook Islands Aitu are on their way to Port Moresby as a sacrifice to the Papua New Guinea Kumuls, in the Pacific Bowl.

In case you’re wondering where the Samoans are – they lost to England in the UK early this morning 18-34.

In Football: Lionel Messi’s postseason debut is putting MLS in the spotlight when Inter Miami hosts Atlanta United in the first round of the MLS Cup playoffs.

The game will be free to stream on Apple TV, as part of a push to gain more viewers in the second season of a 10-year, US$2.5Billion deal with MLS.

Apple doesn’t release its TV ratings, but it reportedly surpassed 2 million subscribers for MLS last season.

Atlanta United will host Inter Miami in Game 2 next weekend. In September, nearly 68,000 fans turned out to Mercedes-Benz Stadium to watch Messi play there.

The MLS’s total regular season attendance tally was 11.4 million, up from 10.9 million in 2023 - a new record of 23,234 per game average.

In UFC: Ilia Topuria said he would knock Max Holloway out for the first time in his career — and that is exactly what happened in UFC308 in Abu Dhabi yesterday.

The UFC Featherweight King proved that he is the real deal, dropping Holloway with a brutal right hand, and then getting the job done with a left hook.

In the co-main event of UFC308, undefeated Russian, Khamzat Chimaev forced Australian, Robert Whittaker to tap out in one of the most violent submissions ever seen.

In the MLB World Series: Yoshinobu Yamamoto emerged from Shohei Ohtani's large shadow yesterday, to give the Los Angeles Dodgers a commanding lead in the World Series.

In just his first MLB season, Yamamato gave up one hit into the seventh innings, while Teoscar Hernandez and Freddie Freeman hit back-to-back home runs for the Dodgers 4-2 win over the New York Yankees to take a 2-0 World Series lead.

    Happy birthday Jenell Pardiwalla!

Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian, in the middle of the Blue continent, where it is mostly cloudy again and a warm 23 degrees Celsius at 5am this morning.

In Rugby Union: The All Blacks crushed Eddie Jones’s Japan 64-19 in Yokohama yesterday, running in 10 tries in a routine win despite a sleepy start.

Debutant Ruben Love put a polish on the score by claiming two late tries in the space of three minutes for New Zealand after coming off the bench.

The match was the All Blacks’ first in a tour that will also see them take on England, Ireland, France and Italy on successive weekends.

In Rugby League: Playing in his last Test for the Fiji Bati, Michael Jennings scored a treble, Maika Sivo and Semi Valemei chimed in with a double each, out of a total of 10 tries of which eight were converted for a big 56-6 win over the Cook Islands in the Pacific Bowl in Suva last night.

The Fiji Bulikula also won 18-6.

In the NBA: Following his high-profile move from the Golden State Warriors, four-time NBA Champion Klay Thompson was back to his best, dropping six triples on 7-of-13 shooting from the field with seven rebounds and three steals in 26 minutes in his Dallas Mavericks debut.

While Thompson popped off 22 points, Luka Doncic top-scored with 27 as Dallas downed the San Antonio Spurs 109-120 in their season opener on Friday.

The sharpshooting star’s six three-pointers set a franchise record for the most threes for a Mavericks player on debut.

In UFC: “It’s a tough fight for both guys. If you look at what Rob has accomplished, who he has fought, this is one of his toughest tests. And there’s no doubt about it that this is definitely Khamzat’s toughest test,” UFC Boss Dana White bangs on about Robert Whittaker vs Khamzat Chimaev in UFC308 today in Abu Dhabi.

In Football: Man U is actively speaking to the following Managers to replace Erik10: Former Barcelona Coach Xavi, Sporting Lisbon’s Ruben Amorim, Edin Terzic who is available after leaving Borussia Dortmund and Brentford’s Thomas Frank also has his admirers at Old Trafford.

In the MLB World Series: The Los Angeles Dodgers brought back vivid memories of championships in 1981 and 1988, all wrapped inside a single emotional evening, as they powered their way to the early advantage in the MLB World Series.

Freddie Freeman hit a game-ending grand slam in the bottom of the 10th innings as Los Angeles rallied for a 6-3 win over the New York Yankees yesterday to win Game 1.
The 35-year-old first baseman delivered in the clutch with a moment that is destined to become part of the folklore of World Series history.

An elated Freeman joked that he had almost had an out-of-body experience as he rounded the bases before being mobbed by team-mates as roars of “Freddie, Freddie” cascaded down from the sold-out Dodger Stadium stands.

“It felt like nothing, just kind of floating,” Freeman said. “Those are the kind of things, when you’re five years old with your two older brothers and you’re playing in the backyard, those are the scenarios you dream about; two outs, bases loaded in a World Series game.

The Sydney Morning Herald is reporting Addo-Carr faces the sack over his drug scandal that saw him suspended for the Club’s first final in eight years, after testing positive to cocaine during a roadside drugs test last month.

In Football: Fenerbahce boss, Jose Mourinho was sent to the stands as his new side held his former Club, Man U 1-1 on Thursday to extend the English giants’ wait for a Europa League win.

United have drawn all three of their European games this season and a point does little to ease the pressure on under-fire Manager Erik10.

Man U is languishing in 21st spot of the 36-team table, with their chances of securing a Top 8 finish to progress directly to the last 16 - fading.

In UFC: Australian Robert Whittaker’s undefeated UFC rival, Khamzat Chimaev was the last fighter to make weight for Sunday’s UFC308 clash - a UFC title eliminator.

Officially, UFC308 weigh-in opened at 9am in Abu Dhabi yesterday, with all fighters told that they had two hours to make the weight.

While most fighters went within the first 30 minutes, Chimaev did not appear until there was only 13 minutes to spare.

But, with a wry smile, the Chechnyan strolled out, removed his shorts and weighed in bang on 84.4Kg.

    Let’s get ready to R U M B L E!

In Netball: The Diamonds will return from New Zealand with their Constellation Cup hopes hanging by a thread after Australia once again struggled in attack in last night’s 52-63 loss.

It’s a worst-case scenario for the World Champions after another Silver Ferns drubbing – making it now eight straight losses in New Zealand.

Maybe Coach Stacey Marinkovich – in her 50th Test in charge, should step aside.

In Sports Biz: Juan Soto, born 25 years ago in Santa Domingo in the Dominican Republic, hit a three-run homer to beat the Cleaveland Guardians in Game 5, sending his New York Yankees to the World Series to face Shoshei Ohtani and the LA Rams.

The Yankees outfielder will be a free agent this offseason and could sign a deal worth US$500Million dollars.

Only in the USA: Major League Baseball has got the World Series of its dreams with two titans of the sport meeting on the biggest stage for the first time in more than four decades, when it begins tomorrow at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles.

The last time the New York Yankees and the Los Angeles Dodgers met in a World Series was in 1981, so there is a lot of pent up interest and demand for tickets among their fans.

The cheapest ticket available for all of the games at Dodger Stadium is US$1,074 while Yankee Stadium has standing room passes for US$896 before fees and seats starting at US$981 before fees, according to the New York Post.

At the other end of the scale, a front row seat near the dugout will set you back an eye-watering $US30,000.

Broadcasters are also licking their lips, with total viewership tipped to surpass this year’s NBA finals - which averaged 11.3 million viewers per game.

Last year’s MLB Finals was a record low 9.1 million average viewers, watching the Texas Rangers claim their first World Series title, beating the Arizona Diamondbacks.

    And that’s a wrap peeps!
