    Breaking Justice is a narrative documentary series that covers an unfolding current criminal case that has exploded into the public consciousness. Sports journalist Jenn Brown and former federal prosecutor Francey Hakes host the series and guide the listener through the complicated criminal cases of two men whose stories interlock. Harry Goularte, Jr., was accused of sexually abusing the four-year-old son of former MMA World Heavyweight Champion Cain Velasquez over a period of months at a day care in San Jose, California owned by Goularte’s mother. Goularte was arrested but let out on bond almost immediately, with no notice to the Velasquez family. Cain Velasquez found out Goularte was released and pursued Goularte by car in what appears to be an act of vigilante justice. He shot at the vehicle Goularte was in and forced it off the road. Goularte’s stepfather was the only wounded, and Velasquez was arrested. But unlike Goularte, Velasquez was denied bond.

    Jenn and Francey cover these two cases as they unfold, with inside access to Velasquez (in an interview from his jail cell), his family, and his closest friends, who walk us through the events that led up to his shocking vigilante-style attack. Jenn and Francey also get experts’ perspectives on brain injuries, vigilantism, and California justice, and even record the first-hand perspective of an abuse survivor whose father killed the abuser on live television.

About the Creator, Writer, and Narrator

Jenn Brown is a two-time Emmy Award winning broadcaster with knowledge and expertise in the TV industry that spans almost 2 decades.
Brown is best known as the first female correspondent on the hit series Inside the NFL on Showtime. She has also served as a host & reporter for ESPN on a variety of programming, a host on American Ninja Warrior for NBC, and as a live studio host for NFL Network. Most recently, she served as a host and reporter for Bellator MMA on Showtime.
Growing up with parents that were Olympic Gymnastics coaches, Jenn’s love of sports began at a young age. She competed in 7 sports in high school, and went on to play softball for the University of Florida where she was honored as a 3 x NFCA Academic All-American. She graduated Summa Cum Laude with a degree in criminology. Jenn lives in Atlanta with her husband, actor Wes Chatham, and her two sons, Nash and Rhett.

About the Creator, Writer, and Narrator

Francey Hakes was a prosecutor for 16 years, serving first as an Assistant District Attorney and then as an Assistant U.S. Attorney with a variety of assignments including national security and child exploitation matters. Francey also served a special detail to the Office of Intelligence Policy and Review presenting FISA warrants to the FISA Court in counterterrorism and counter-espionage cases and assisted in the prosecution of Zacarias Moussaoui. She was also the country’s first National Coordinator for Child Exploitation Prevention and Interdiction, a post appointed by the U.S. Attorney General. Hakes oversaw all child exploitation efforts at the Department of Justice, testified before the U.S. Congress and the United States Sentencing Commission, and briefed senior officials at the White House, Congress, and the Department of Justice on child exploitation issues. She is CEO of her own consulting firm, providing advice, counsel and expert witness services to firms, law enforcement, schools, governments, industry, non-profits, Hollywood firms and others on national security and the protection of children. Francey has appeared as a legal analyst on Fox News, CNN, NBC Nightly News, and other news series, and is an opinion contributor for The Hill and the Washington Examiner. Francey was a Senior Producer of America’s Most Wanted and a producer of the Audible Originals Call Me God and Shootout: The Battle for North Hollywood. She holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Georgia, a juris doctor from Ohio Northern University College of Law, and an honorary doctorate from Ohio Northern University.

This Podcast Is Eye-Opening

I couldn’t stop listening once I started. I had heard of the case, but I had no idea if the details that transpired. Jenn Brown does amazing job of breaking down the information and getting to truth of what happened. This podcast has provoked many emotions and truly makes me question the Justice system. I need more podcasts like this one! Wow!!!

Truth

I understand trying to protect your child by keeping the truth from them. Been there. However when they find out from school friends, family, social media or others in the community, it can backfire. The impact of finding out that way can be detrimental.

Shocking

Wow, was that judge all there letting go of child molester?…so corrupted! Needs to have heads examined! What parent would just sit and watch that. Looks like CA Justice definitely has disturbing trending issues..
