使徒约翰在约翰一书 5:4-8中说能胜过世界的信仰就在于相信藉水和血而来的耶稣基督为救世主。耶稣基督来到世上“不是单用水，乃是用水又用血。”约翰在这里明确地说水和圣灵的福音是主牺牲他自己的身体后成就的惟一真福音。
使徒约翰说:“因为凡从神生的，就胜过世界；使我们胜了世界的，就是我们的信心”(约翰一书 5:4)，这里的“世界”指罪。因为撒旦魔鬼统治世界(以弗所书 2:2),“世界”这个词在圣经里常用作罪的同义词。死亡靠罪统治全人类，因为罪使我们与神，生命之源分开(罗马书 5:12-17)。
