In today’s episode, guest host Heather invites us to join her on June 8th for Day 159 of our journey through the Scriptures. Together, we reflect on the wisdom found in Ecclesiastes chapters 7 through 9 and Ephesians chapter 4. God may be opposed to trying to earn something, but he's not opposed to our effort. So let's work at it. We have to work at it because effort is what it's going to take, and our work is an active participation with God. It's a testimony of our inclusion into the life and love of God. It's not done in exchange for his favor or love. No, he has already included us and loved us. Our work is a response to what we have become, what he has made us—his children. So we work. We participate, we respond. We share in the ministry of Christ in this world now. And we all get to do this. Not just the hired folks, the pastors and teachers, the people who speak for a living. No, we are all a part of God's kingdom work. In Ephesians 4:3, we're told that we are to make every effort to keep ourselves unified in the Spirit. Make the effort by throwing off those old attitudes and behaviors that lead to hopelessness. Instead, work at stepping into and training your heart in new attitudes that lead to life and hope and a future. Ephesians 4:4 says that you have been called to one glorious hope for the future. We are to make every effort to renew our mind and thoughts and attitudes. We do that by hearing and applying the gospel to our daily lives. We have to work at that. We have to receive the good news of Christ's sufficiency. We have to remind our hearts daily that his grace is sufficient for all that we face. We need to rest in his love and care for us every day. That is a worthy effort that God honors. Jesus says, for everyone who asks, receives; everyone who seeks, finds; and to everyone who knocks, the door will be opened. That will require effort, but the strength will be his. The spirit of Christ living in and through us will be the strength that enables us to work at it. The good news of Christ will be the thing that renews our heart, mind, and attitude. Then we can begin to experience that glorious hope for the future that we have in him. TODAY'S PRAYERS: Lord God Almighty and everlasting Father, you have brought us in safety to this new day. Preserve us with your mighty power that we might not fall into sin or be overcome by adversity. And in all we do, direct us to the fulfilling of your purpose. Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. O God, you have made of one blood all the peoples of the earth and sent your blessed Son to preach peace to those who are far and those who are near. Grant that people everywhere may seek after you and find you, bring the nations into your fold. Pour out your spirit on all flesh and hasten the coming of your kingdom through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. And now, Lord, make me an instrument of your peace. Where there is hatred, let me sow love; where there is injury, pardon; where there is doubt, faith; where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light; and where there is sadness, joy. O Lord, grant that I might not seek to be consoled as to console, to be understood as to understand, to be loved as to love. For it is in the giving that we receive, in the pardoning that we are pardoned. It is in the dying that we are born unto eternal life. Amen. If you want to grow, you have to have roots. Paul prays that you and I will sink our roots deep down into God's love. His love is where life and growth begin and where it all continues from. His love is where we grow strong. Ephesians 3:16-17 says, “I pray that from his glorious, unlimited resources, he will empower you with inner strength through his Spirit. Then Christ will make his home in your hearts. As you trust him, your roots will grow down into God’s love and keep you strong.” Paul doesn’t want us to merely know about this love; he wants us to go on a journey into it, to discover just how long, how wide, how high, and how deep his love really is. This love knows no limits. It can never be fully sounded. We are forever drawn into its embrace. How are your roots today? If you want to grow and have life and strength, you have to sink your roots into his love. Maybe today it’s something as simple as hearing the words, “you are loved.” Is there something that keeps you from really receiving that? Is there shame or a wound? Something that stands between you and those words? Whatever comes and mutes those words and tells you they are not for you, I encourage you today to look into the face of Jesus and receive his love without interference. Today you are loved. So let your roots sink deep into Christ and find strength in him. Today there is nothing that can separate you from the love of Christ. You have been drawn into and embraced by him. You can be strong. Let the beauty of the gospel of Christ draw you further up, farther in, and find your strength in him. That's the prayer that I have for my own soul. That’s the prayer that I have for my family, for my wife, my daughters, my son. And that’s the prayer that I have for you. May it be so. TODAY'S PRAYERS: Gracious and everlasting God, you have brought us through the shadow of night into the promise of a new day. You go before us with your mercy, sustain us by your grace and keep us from wandering paths of fear or pride. Let every word we speak and every step we take be formed by the goodness of Christ. O Lord, gather your people far and near. May every tribe and tongue come to know your peace. Let justice roll like a river and healing flow where there has been division. Pour out your spirit upon all flesh and bring us closer to the day when your kingdom comes in fullness through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen. And now, as our Lord has taught us, we are bold to pray: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. In today’s episode, your host Hunter invites you to join him on June 6th as we continue our journey through Scripture. On this 158th day of Bible reading, we explore the deep questions of meaning and purpose found in Ecclesiastes chapters 1-3, take comfort and inspiration from Psalm 45, and close our reading with the hope-filled promises of Ephesians chapter 2. Hunter reflects on the age-old struggle between despair and hope: while Ecclesiastes wrestles with life’s apparent meaninglessness, Ephesians reminds us of the new life and abiding peace we have in Christ. Through thoughtful Scripture reading and heartfelt prayer, today’s episode encourages us to see beyond life’s challenges, embrace the joy that God offers, and remember that in Christ, we are never alone. So grab your Bible, take a deep breath, and let’s spend some time together in God’s word. TODAY'S DEVOTION: Meaningless, meaningless, cries the preacher. All is meaningless, he cries. Try as he might, he cannot make sense of his broken life. Nothing in the end seems to be right. All seems to be wrong. He cannot find a way to reconcile life's disparities. He has eternity in his heart. And yet the present is fraught with fractures. Nothing makes sense. But Paul in Ephesians cries out something different. You lived in this world without God and without hope. But now, he says, you have been united with Christ Jesus. Once you were far away from God, but now you have been brought near to him through the blood of Christ. Christ himself has brought us peace through the cross. The good news has come to us. In Christ, no longer is life meaningless and hopeless. No, now we have life in him. When we are tempted to see the world through the lens of despair and hopelessness, we can look to the life of Jesus. We can look to his sacrifice. We can look to the love that has been poured out in order that we might be united with him. In our hopelessness and despair, he has offered us his love. His love led him to a cross so he could free us from that despair and offer us life here, life now with eternal purposes and present joy. The preacher says, "Everything is meaningless, completely meaningless." But Paul says he gave us life when he raised Christ from the dead. There is someone far greater than Solomon who is able to mend the human soul and make us new. He is even now making all things new. So let us step into the eternal purposes that he has for us so that we can begin to live, abide and rest and play and have joy and strength in him. That's the prayer that I have for my own soul. That's the prayer that I have for my family, for my wife and my daughters and my son. And that's the prayer that I have for you. May it be so. TODAY'S PRAYERS: Jesus is my shepherd. You have called me by my name into the life of the beloved. Here in the stillness, I remember that I am not alone. I belong to you and to the great communion of saints and sinners held together in your love. Remind me, Lord, that every breath is grace. Every encounter is a chance to give what I have received—mercy without measure. When I forget who I am, when I lose my way, lead me again to still waters. Restore my soul, renew my hope. Reroute me in the joy of simply being yours. Amen. And now, as our Lord has taught us, we are bold to pray: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. That is the message I hear everyday in this podcast. Hunter and Heather do an excellent job of walking with us through God’s word and reminding us that God wants relationship with us and that our hearts and minds can be directed toward our Savior through his word. Over the past year my heart has heard many messages of hope, love and forgiveness. I am looking forward to what God has to say to my heart this year. Thank you Hunter for being my “Bible reading coach.” I have truly been blessed.

Like you, I imagine, I was looking for a daily Bible plan. What I found was so much more. The DRB Not only goes through the Bible over the course of a year in a very smart way, but also includes a short but well thought-out discussion and a beautiful prayer. It is an excellent 20-30 minutes that you can use to start, center or end your day right. I think it could be especially helpful if you are feeling lost or unloved, and who isn’t sometimes?
