    Notable Quotes:

    • Once you know what you need to do, get it done in the first instance and keep it active.
    • Generally speaking, travel insurance will fix anything minor, anything that's preventing you from continuing your travels, whereas medical insurance covers any treatment that you need, including the non-emergency stuff, which in medical terms is anything that's scheduled.
    • If you're living internationally, make sure you have international healthcare. Don't rely on needing to fly across the world for medical treatment because you can't afford it in the place where you're living. It's not smart.
    • If you're living in one place as a permanent expat there or even a local, you can plan things for your precise needs, and you can make sure that you get, uh, get the treatment in your local area. If you are moving around the world, you need to make sure you can access this stuff everywhere you're going to go. Because it's not just about being out of pocket. It's about being able to get that treatment.
    • It doesn't matter what amount you choose, but having those services to help your family deal with all parts of the process that's the real value there.
    • Whether you are considering becoming a nomad, or if you are already a nomad, or even if you have no intention of doing that, still think about your financial plans. But, you know, because even if your plans change, and even if the plan ends up being not fit for the purpose that you want later on, the process that you go through of formulating that plan is extremely important.
    • Money is not the biggest thing in life. It doesn't buy happiness but can substantially pay off being miserable. It's, it's the most, uh, effective tool, uh, in your toolbox because you can switch it for other tools, pretty much, uh, whenever.

    Notable Quotes:

    • Making friends is not difficult for me, but accepting that people come and go is sometimes difficult. That I come and go, I've made this decision, I've chosen this life. No one forced me.
    • You need to be able to connect with people. For someone who feels, uh, maybe a little bit uncomfortable or awkward talking to people you don't know, that's probably the most important thing to practice and become comfortable with. And all the rest will just, like, naturally follow from that.
    • Traveling is the best teacher in life because you don't see your bias until you go to a different environment.
    • Do it. It's the best experience you can have. Sometimes, it's hard, but it's the greatest way to learn about yourself, others, life, love, business, and what you want. So if you have a doubt and are considering, ah, yeah, I would like to do that, but I'm not sure, permit yourself to do it like it's now. Life is now; it's happening now. So if you think about this, try it. If you don't like it, you can always return home, but at least try it.
    • If you are already a digital nomad, don't work too much. Enjoy the experience. Find a way to trust that it works, that the business works, and that things are always in your favor. And enjoy where you are and the people you meet, and just be absorbed in that.

In this episode, I had the incredible opportunity to sit down with Anne Claessen, a seasoned digital nomad, as we talked about her remarkable journey in remote work and travel.

Anne's evolution from a carefree backpacker to a successful digital nomad is a tale of following one's heart. Her story turned pivotal when she recognized that her aspiration to become a lawyer didn't align with her true passions.

From crafting a practical yearly budget and embracing unforeseen prospects to curating a lifestyle uniquely fitting personal preferences, Anne emphasizes avoiding the comparison trap and charting a course tailored to individual ambitions.

She also shares a crucial lesson she learned about health insurance, an insight drawn from her battle with dengue fever during her early travels. Her firsthand experience underscored the significance of comprehensive medical coverage for fellow nomads navigating unpredictable health challenges.

[02:09] Why Anne decided to become a digital nomad

[06:41] Transitioning from backpacking to digital nomad lifestyle

[10:19] Creating opportunities and crafting a career as a digital nomad

    [14:01] Balancing work and travel

[18:39] Balancing flexibility and work commitment as a digital nomad

[20:21] Financial planning and budgeting for a balanced digital nomad lifestyle

[23:59] Avoiding comparison and embracing individuality in the digital nomad lifestyle

[26:23] Exploring the digital nomad lifestyle by starting with domestic travel

[28:43] Anne’s worst experience while traveling

    [31:28] Anne’s best experience

    Notable Quotes:

    • I had to push myself a little bit, um, and say, okay, like, what are you waiting for? If you want to do this digital nomad thing, now is the time. And I didn't want to go home. I didn't want to find a job in an office in the Netherlands and just, you know, go to work every day. So I was like, this is it. It needs to happen.
    • The tasks that are easy for me are not easy for other people, you know? So that's where I'm naturally good at, and, you know, lean into what's easy.
    • When you budget as a digital nomad, it needs to make sense to look at it month to month. You have to look at the entire year. So look at what income you need for the entire year and where you will spend it.
    • The most important thing I've learned is to keep my eyes and ears open to get tips and tricks from other nomads. That is awesome advice from someone else, but also, see what works for me.
    • It's really good to know that there are many options. You can make this lifestyle your own, and you can make your online career your own. And that can be scary because there are a lot of decisions to make. But it's really good to start, see what works, and just go from there, knowing there's always a way to change things.
    • We're all different; you just have to see what works for you and not everyone else.

    Notable Quotes:

    • There are always opportunities coming your way when you're traveling. And that may be from just a new experience to somebody you may meet that ordinarily you would not, um, different walks of life, but you can get cocooned into a sort of a lifestyle that sort of, while you might be happy, it restricts opportunities. So if you're looking for something else, it's important that you get out there and find it. And for me, that always recharges my batteries when I travel.
    • Always seek out every opportunity that comes your way. Look after yourself, um, you know, don't do anything too foolish. Keep your wits about you. But over and above, enjoy your experiences while traveling and working overseas.
    • You can read what you want in the news, but yeah. When you go there for yourself, you can fully understand how people live and work in places you visit.
    • The people you meet along the way, you know, there are some amazing things you will see and do that you wouldn't if you stayed.
    • If you're a youngster, like you said, a young person's more likely to get on a motorbike and perhaps have an accident and stuff like that. You have to live your life. You have to take things to the full and enjoy every aspect of it. Um, but you know, just around the corner, things can happen. So make sure that you're covered.

    Notable Quotes:

    • Living with nature is amazing, but it also takes you, um, it takes you to cultivate harmony and wonder, I think. And, um, and I think it's amazing because we live in interconnection with nature.
    • It's all about connection, being at the right place at the right time, meeting the right people, or sending the right email because we feel it's right to, you know, contact these people or contact this association organization. And so yeah, that's how, how we work.
    • What is amazing about our, you know, the mind is that you get so much frustration, but it's not about having a cold shower. I mean, we have a cold shower all the time. It's not different. It's about, you know, it's about, um, not having what we expected that we would have, meaning a hot shower.
    • Most of the time, the problem is that your mind is creating a lot of scenarios about things that could happen. And we had to learn to let go of that, you know, not to let our mind create all these scenarios to, you know, it's not here, it's not happening now, so just let it go.
    • When you welcome your fear, you can still go forward. Even if it's there, you don't have to stop. And so we had to do that a lot of time to welcome the office and learn to work hand in hand with them.
    • The big thing is not being afraid to try to do that, of diving into the unknown. Because when you start a new project, you usually have to dive into the unknown. At one point, you have to stick to the big step, just the first step.

Kyle shares his insights and experiences as a 16+ year remote worker, now traveling the world with his family since February 2023. We explore the challenges of maintaining friendships and the importance of finding a base to handle logistics and financial matters.

Join the conversation and gain valuable insights and tips for a successful and fulfilling lifestyle on the go!

    Key Highlights:

    [02:11] Kyle’s background

    [04:18] Recommendation to digital nomads

[07:47] The kind of careers digital nomads can engage in

[09:51] Advice to people who want to live a digital nomad life

[25:18] Kyle’s experience traveling with family

[29:01] Why Kyle decided to embark on the trip

[35:47] How to connect with Kyle

    Notable Quotes:

    • It doesn't matter where you are. Why are we getting stuff done? So I'm a very big proponent of putting that emphasis towards the career, towards the business piece of that.
    • With the technology, the ability to do that from anywhere is incredible. The world is, in many ways, easier than ever to do this. But the obstacles are sincere or very large, which would be the traditional pushback.
    • If you are thinking about turning into a kind of digital nomad lifestyle from a corporate, I think the long-term plan is important: to test the waters. So find out what you can and cannot get away with.
    • My one bit of advice is that do not do it on your own; there are a ton of cool services out there to be able to leverage, it's going to cost money, but that money actually ends up saving a hell of a lot more down the road, when things tend to go wrong.
