京阪石山坂本線の終点、坂本比叡山口駅。ここにはかつて石を積む事を専門としていた「穴太衆」と呼ばれる職人集団がいました。弥生時代に日本に稲作が伝来した際、水田を作るのに石垣を積んだ事がそのルーツではないかといわれておりますが、その後、この穴太衆は江戸城をはじめ、日本中の多くのお城の基礎の石を積むのに駆り出されていたりしたそうです。
