前回お話しした坂本も大津も琵琶湖のほとりの港町として発展してきました。平安時代の頃より日本海側でとれた海産物などの物資は船に積まれて琵琶湖を縦断し、京都まで運ばれて献上されていましたが、その際、坂本や大津は交易の要衝として重要な役割を果たしていました。やがて流通が盛んになってくると関所が設けられて、通行料や倉庫の保管料などを徴収するようになっていきます・・・。
