EP179 - ADHD & the U.S. Elections

  • Summary

  • We The People During a recent zoom coaching group that I’m part of, one of the participants asked our coach: “Is the US going to make it?” This certainly was not a question I had expected since this particular group’s focus is for its participants to share personal issues and get insights on how to tackle them. Our coach quickly shifted gears, took a deep breathe and calmly said: “Not this America. It’s on its way out.” Not a very inspiring and positive response, I thought. After all, I had joined this group to receive uplifting, optimistic information and tools that I could use to improve my own life. But I suddenly felt a veil of anxiety swoop in and highjack my previously calm mind . Yet I was intrigued by this big picture question as I love deep explorations of such topics. And now I was even more intrigued by how the group would react to the coaches’ rather dark statement. What followed was a sobering group conversation about the state of our nation. I started to see that the most pressing question clouding the American psyche - hidden underneath a thick layer of unresolved anger, outrage and division - was a simple question: ’Are we going to be okay?’ And since ‘We’ consists of millions of ‘I’s… millions of individuals are feeling their own level of anxiety, wondering whether they would be okay following the upcoming elections. It was quickly evident to me that this conversation was not at all about politics but rather about our own individual levels of fear of death. The problem with this simple question is that it’s impossible for us to answer it. We would have to first define what ‘we’ means. And what ’okay’ means. Maybe it would be easier to ask ‘will I be okay?’. Because that way, we can define for ourselves what those words mean to us. Will I, the human form survive? Will I die during some form of local unrest? Will my partner, my husband, my wife, my children be hurt by some evil forces of the opposing party? Will there be a civil war? Bombs? World war 3? Is this the beginning of the Apocalypse? And by being ‘okay’, do I mean that I still get to go to Starbucks, keep my job, drive my car, play pickle ball, binge Netflix, go on all-inclusive resort vacations and invest in the stock market? So, let’s look at what is frantically knocking at our front doors: Elections. Blue vs. Red, Good vs. Evil, Right vs. Wrong, Them vs. Us, You vs. Me… let’s call all of this ‘Division’ for simplicity reasons. To our coach’s point, the United States of America is clearly divided and its current incarnation might soon come to an end. It is a possibility. We may not want to look at it. We may not like it. We may not want to face the fact that it might become a reality. But we do need to consider it as being one of the options. That said, what I foresee is going to end is not the people, not the spirit, not the states… only the ‘United’ part. Let’s face it… we no longer see eye to eye as a nation. I personally feel that a much needed split up between the main two clashing narratives on how to run this country - is needed. And a split up wouldn’t be the end of the world by the way...
