    Oct 27 2022

For Episode 17, Yvonne and Tina are joined by Kit Wolverson, a consultant for Mott MacDonald, as they discuss bridges, community work, Kit's experience in the construction industry, and what Kit would like to see different in the industry in the next five years.

Ever so often we, as an industry, congratulate ourselves on a minor rise in  the percentage of women joining the construction industry. Whilst this is good and we should be pleased with the rise in diversity, when we dig a bit deeper, we find that attitudes towards women in construction, particularly on the construction site, are still in need of improvement. In this episode Kit tells us about her perspective and experience of working on site which helped her to decide to work in a design office.

Kit believes that, by being more visible and more vocal about women in construction and their experience, we can get to a point in the next 5 years where, seeing women on a construction site is 'normal' and not a novelty.

Kit also tells us what she wants to see in the construction industry with respect to sustainability.

The key topics in this episode are:

    - Community work,

    - Building bridges,

    - Experience working on site,

    - Why are bridges so good,

    - Shining a light on women in construction, and

    - Sustainability.

"'At a senior-level they want to shape you into the same mold, and that's not diversity"

We've all seen this before. Diversity comes from having diverse teams, behaving and thinking in diverse ways. No one ever changed the world in an echo chamber. If we want to change the industry, I mean REALLY change it for the better.

We need to think differently, we need diversity.

Have a look at your own team/organisation/industry. Do you have diversity, or something that looks diverse but has been moulded to act and think the same?

In this week's Episode of the Engineering Rebuilt Podcast Yvonne Raleigh and Lina Söderberg are joined by the brilliant Louise Haining as they discuss:

    - Working as a contractor,

    - Diversity,

    - Returning to work after having children,

    - Self-care,

    - Different roles in construction, and

    - Open water swimming.
