I loved this series so far but it hits an insurmountable issue here.
The problem is mainly Anne. The story tried to do something really really REALLY difficult, and it left me with a bad taste in my mouth. I understand that there are character faults inherent to the time period, and Anne is rife with these. Mark/Mary tried their best and stayed true to their ideals, but Anne needed guidance and only took action as a reaction to the bad deed what was done to her and the slave she once owned. I understand the need for a connection to drive her but it relegated the character Moses to a mammy at best and a set piece at worst. Nothing but gratitude was his response and honestly that is distasteful to say the very least. MAKING HIM accept her apology and having her decorate her apology with her own lackluster personal trauma was disturbing. I can’t in good conscience ever recommend this series to a POC. I’m honestly having trouble moving forward.
