About this listen
Ed Kemper is one of the well-known serial killers in American history. His story, and parts of it, have been used in pop-culture for the basis of fictional characters in books and movies, but often the severity of his crimes is understated. Truth is stranger than fiction, the saying goes. While this applies to so many things, the entire Mark Twain quote is a better summation of Ed Kemper’s life and crimes. Truth is stranger than fiction, but it is because fiction is obliged to stick to possibilities: Truth isn’t. The disturbing details of the things he did would be unbelievable if not for his candor in his confession. He is a puzzling combination of a self-serving cold-blooded killer and an altruistic person who wants to share his demons to keep others from doing what he has done. The contradiction is an example of a true Jekyll and Hyde. This is the story of Ed Kemper, The Co-Ed Killer.
