On this week’s episode we explore the occult and religious symbolism woven prominently throughout Fritz Lang’s silent-film-cinema-classic Metropolis! Often credited with establishing the science-fiction genre, the symbolism and story of Metropolis is often naively overlooked to emphasize the innovative use of special effects which would come to overshadow the film’s entire legacy. Using the historical backdrop of German occultism as our guide we find a coherent use of esoteric symbolism throughout Metropolis which illustrates some of the revolutionary, Aquarian philosophy rife in the counter-cultural underground of The Weimar Republic of the time. In the free section of the show we discuss its creator Fritz Lang, his personal quirks, political troubles and potent artistic legacy before articulating some of the occult symbolism used in the first half of the film. We even use the novelization of the film to round-out our search. In the extended version of the show we continue to unpack ideas newly on loan from Aleister Crowley, what it all has to do with Luciferianism, the Brotherhood of Saturn, the dawning of the Age of Aquarius and how these motifs have strongly inspired the science fiction we still enjoy today.
