What do you do when you can't fulfill your promises? That was my challenge when I resigned from a church less than twelve hours after I agreed to move to their town and work with them.

But the principle applies to anyone who discovers they have promised what they can't do.

  • Investment Principles

Is there any hope of investing to accumulate money for retirement and other big purchases? Does anybody know enough to help me understand the principles of investment? These ten principles have helped me to develop a plan and not worry about each day's market report.

Here are three books that I've found valuable:

The Only Investment Guide You'll Ever Need: Revised Edition, by Andrew Tobias
I read the first edition of this book in 1978. Although I didn't learn very much, I did learn a few principles that started me on a life of investing. In 1987, he published The Only Other Investment Guide You'll Ever Need. I like his humor and practical advice. He's continued to revise as markets and investment products change.

The Total Money Makeover: A Proven Plan for Financial Fitness, by Dave Ramsey Dave Ramsey has helped thousands budget, get out of debt, and invest successfully. His guidelines are easy to understand, and he emphasizes giving as a fundamental principle of money management.

The Psychology of Money: Timeless lessons on wealth, greed, and happiness, by Morgan Housel
This is a foundation book on money. It starts with the heart instead of the math. We can learn about spreadsheets, the market, and investment tools, but if our hearts aren't right, none of the rest will make us financially successful. Here is the summary of the book on Amazon:

Doing well with money isn’t necessarily about what you know. It’s about how you behave. And behavior is hard to teach, even to really smart people.

Money―investing, personal finance, and business decisions―is typically taught as a math-based field, where data and formulas tell us exactly what to do. But in the real world people don’t make financial decisions on a spreadsheet. They make them at the dinner table, or in a meeting room, where personal history, your own unique view of the world, ego, pride, marketing, and odd incentives are scrambled together.

The apostle Paul wrote in Philippians 1:3: "I thank my God every time I remember you."

That sums up my thoughts on the people where I grew up: Hickman County, Centerville, Tennessee, and the Shipps Bend community. Listen as I recount how many people touched me and how significant their influence was on me.
