  • Heaven's not the end of the world
    Aug 2 2021

    We’re living in a post-Christian culture that believes future peace can be achieved by scientific/technological advancement or social/political action. How might a biblical view of heaven breathe life into this cultural impulse for peace and renewal?

    In this episode I share the final sermon in the “sermons for a post-Christian culture” series, focusing on a biblical view of heaven that will transform not just our hope for the future, but also our attitude and behaviors in the present.

    Revelation 21:1-5 ESV:

    Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God. He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.” And he who was seated on the throne said, “Behold, I am making all things new.” Also he said, “Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.”

  • Experiencing true rest: the paradox, pathway, and peace
    Jul 28 2021

    Show of hands: who's feeling tired or burned out from life?

    Yeah, me too.

    That's why Jesus's invitation to come and find REST is so attractive to me. But how do we experience the rest he offers? How is it different from the world's perspective on rest?

    In this episode, I share a sermon that seeks to answer these questions.

    Matthew 11:28-30 CSB:

    “Come to me, all of you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take up my yoke and learn from me, because I am lowly and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

  • How to fight temptation in a post-Christian world
    Jul 26 2021

    What do you do when you feel tempted to indulge your fleshly desires? Culture says to act on the things you desire most, because they are the truest part of who you really are, but what does God say?

    In this message I talk about the anatomy of temptation, showing you not just where temptation comes from, but how to fight it practically. I end by encouraging you to find your identity in who God says you are, not in who your temptations say you are.

    Proverbs 4:20-27 (CSB):

    My son, pay attention to my words;

    listen closely to my sayings.

    Don’t lose sight of them;

    keep them within your heart.

    For they are life to those who find them,

    and health to one’s whole body.

    Guard your heart above all else,

    for it is the source of life.

    Don’t let your mouth speak dishonestly,

    and don’t let your lips talk deviously.

    Let your eyes look forward;

    fix your gaze straight ahead.

    Carefully consider the path for your feet,

    and all your ways will be established.

    Don’t turn to the right or to the left;

    keep your feet away from evil.

    Season 2 of the Gray Matter Podcast is here, and in it we’ll be focusing on sermons for following Jesus in a post-Christian world. In this episode, I share a message I preached at Forest Hill Church called “The Truth About Temptation” from Proverbs 4:20-27.
