  • Bitesize: Biohack Your Brain Power with Nootropics | Greg Kelly
    Nov 22 2024
Angela presents a bitesize preview of her forthcoming conversation with Dr Gregory Kelly, a naturopathic physician and vice president of product development at Qualia Life Sciences. Together they examine the fascinating world of nootropics, specifically focusing on natural compounds that enhance brain power and cognitive function. Dr. Kelly shares his insights on the key ingredients in Qualia Mind, such as L-theanine, taurine, and saffron, which work synergistically to improve focus, creativity, and emotional regulation without the jitters often associated with caffeine. KEY TAKEAWAYS Using nootropics like Qualia Mind can enhance emotional regulation and empathy, leading to better interactions with loved ones, especially after a long day. Important nootropic ingredients include L-theanine, taurine, adaptogens like rhodiola, and choline precursors, which work together to enhance focus, reduce jitteriness, and support long-term cognitive health. To maximise the benefits of nootropics, it's recommended to cycle their use, taking breaks to prevent adaptation and maintain effectiveness over time. For best results, nootropics should be taken 30 to 40 minutes before engaging in focused work or athletic performance, with the option to combine with additional caffeine if needed. BEST MOMENTS "The brain performs better when it has more resources. And when it doesn't, the harder jobs it does, like managing our emotions, having empathy, executive functions, are what suffer." "If our brain works better, it's so much easier to do all the other things we need to do to stay healthy." "More is not always better. Stacking things together will bring out the best in our performance." "Saffron has quite a few really good nootropic studies, including some for focus." • Insulin Resistance Decoded: The Secret to Weight Loss, Metabolic Health & Longevity with Dr Morgan Nolte
    Nov 20 2024
Angela is joined by Dr Morgan Nolte, a geriatric physical therapist, to explore the critical topic of insulin resistance and its widespread impact on health. Dr Nolte shares her journey from traditional physical therapy to focusing on disease prevention, emphasising the importance of understanding insulin's role in blood sugar regulation. She also delves into the differences between insulin resistance, prediabetes, and type 2 diabetes, highlighting the often-overlooked significance of fasting insulin levels KEY TAKEAWAYS Insulin resistance is a condition where the body's cells become less sensitive to insulin, leading to higher insulin levels and eventually resulting in elevated blood sugar levels. It is a precursor to prediabetes and type 2 diabetes, affecting a significant portion of the adult population.Regularly checking fasting insulin levels is crucial, as it can indicate insulin resistance long before blood sugar levels rise. A fasting insulin level below six is considered optimal, and awareness of this can help individuals take proactive steps toward lifestyle changes. To improve insulin sensitivity, a diet low in carbohydrates and high in protein and healthy fats is recommended. Focus on whole foods, limit high-sugar fruits, and ensure adequate protein intake (30-40 grams per meal) to support muscle growth and metabolic health.Strength training and regular physical activity are essential for improving insulin sensitivity. Engaging in moderate to high-intensity strength training at least twice a week, along with walking after meals, can significantly help regulate blood sugar levels. BEST MOMENTS "Insulin is a hormone made in your pancreas and it has several vital roles in the body, but the one that we're focusing on today is blood sugar regulation." "88% of adults, at least in America, have some degree of insulin resistance, even if they don't have full-blown prediabetes or type 2 diabetes." "I think the fewer the spikes, the better. Realistically, how we eat in our culture today is purely a matter of commerce and the benefits of being able to ship food." "When stress is up, a few things happen. Number one is your cortisol goes up. Cortisol is one of your stress hormones." • Longevity for Women: Biohacks, Hormones & Global Insights | Zora Benhamou
    Nov 18 2024
Angela is joined by special guest, Zora Benhamou, to examine the multifaceted experiences of menopause, exploring how cultural attitudes and personal stories shape women's journeys through this natural transition. Zora shares her fascinating project of interviewing women from various countries about their menopause experiences, revealing that while symptoms may be universal, perceptions and responses differ significantly across cultures. She also highlights the importance of awareness and education around menopause, discussing common symptoms such as fatigue, mood swings, and sleep disturbances, while also addressing the stigma surrounding hormone therapy KEY TAKEAWAYS Menopause is a universal experience, but cultural attitudes towards it vary significantly. In some countries, women are more open to discussing their experiences, while in others, there is a stigma that leads to rejection of such conversations. Fatigue, mood swings, and sleep disturbances are among the most common symptoms of menopause, often overshadowing hot flashes. Many women are unaware of the full range of menopause symptoms, which can include over 100 different manifestations. The perception of stress plays a crucial role in how women experience menopause. Women in less stressful environments or with a more relaxed attitude tend to cope better with menopausal symptoms, often attributing their resilience to their overall life perspective. There is a lack of awareness and acceptance of hormone therapy in many cultures. Many women are hesitant to consider hormone replacement therapy due to fears of negative health effects, despite the potential benefits it can offer during menopause.
