  • Summary

  • In this episode of the D-Suite, hosts Rita Sallam and Afraz Jaffri discuss the complexities of using generative AI, including the risks of unintended outputs, the impact on the workforce due to automation, and the necessity of enforcing ethical principles across all AI projects.

The episode features insights from Lydia Clougherty Jones, a Gartner expert in data sharing, ethics, and guidelines; and Giles Pavey, global director for data science at Unilever, who shares his experiences and best practices in implementing responsible AI.

Lydia Clougherty Jones is a senior research director analyst in Gartner’s Data and Analytics (D&A) Group. She helps clients drive optimal stakeholder, business and equity value from D&A and AI, including generative AI (GenAI), with a focus on the emerging leadership role of the chief data and analytics officer. She also helps clients navigate global AI and GenAI regulatory dynamics and business impact. Topics she discusses with clients include D&A strategy, GenAI risk, data sharing for business benefit, data/digital ethics, data/D&A value, and D&A and AI risk. Her research interests cover ecosystem-relationship thinking, including via emerging digital trust technologies such as GenAI, metaverse, blockchain and smart contracts. She holds degrees from Boston College (B.A.), Boston University (J.D.) and New York University School of Law (LL.M.). She is also an adjunct professor of law at Vanderbilt Law School and Boston University School of Law.

Giles Pavey is global data science director at Unilever, with a companywide mission to raise both the “floor” of knowledge of AI and data science and also increase the “ceiling” of capability. He also leads Unilever’s thinking on AI Assurance.

Prior to Unilever, Giles worked for the U.K. Government and dunnhumby, where he set up and led the company’s data science team. At dunnhumby, Giles worked with grocery retailers including Tesco, Kroger, Casino and Woolworths across five continents.

Giles is visiting professor in computer science at the University College London AI Lab and Industrial Fellow at the Oxford University School of Mathematics.
