  • La scoperta del principio che avrebbe portato alla creazione del forno a microonde avvenne per caso nel 1945, grazie all'ingegnere Percy Spencer. Spencer lavorava per la Raytheon Corporation, una compagnia americana che produceva componenti radar.

    Mentre stava testando un tubo a vuoto chiamato magnetron impiegato nei radar degli aerei, Spencer notò che una barretta di cioccolato che aveva in tasca si era sciolta. Da questa osservazione (e dalla sua peculiare abitudine di portare snack in tasca) iniziarono le sperimentazioni per la sua nuova invenzione.
