  • Mapping, Making, and Meshing: Developing the Mindset of a Developer (ICC Blog #52)
    Oct 13 2024

In "Die Empty," Todd Henry introduces Mapping, Making, and Meshing as key components for achieving excellence and fulfillment. These elements categorize individuals into Developers, Drivers, Drifters, and Dreamers. Developers excel by integrating all three components, while Drivers focus on Mapping and Making but neglect Meshing. Drifters engage in Making and Meshing but lack Mapping, and Dreamers are involved in Mapping and Meshing but avoid Making. To excel, one must integrate all three components, strive for continuous improvement, and avoid mediocrity. Developing a Developer's mindset involves setting clear objectives, implementing plans, improving skills, fostering self-awareness, and embracing challenges. The journey towards excellence requires dedication, perseverance, and a commitment to delivering one's best work daily.

  • Recent Policy Changes in the UK, Canada, and Australia: Creating Significant Headwinds for International Students
    Sep 28 2024

International students play a vital role in global education, boosting economies and enriching cultures. However, recent policy changes in key destinations like the UK, Canada, and Australia are challenging international student recruitment due to economic pressures and shifting sentiments. These changes may reshape international education in 2024 and 2025. For instance, Australia's economy heavily relies on international students, raising concerns about potential negative impacts if student numbers are limited. International students not only contribute economically but also enhance social and cultural diversity, fostering innovation and competitiveness.

Policy changes, such as stricter immigration rules, are driven by various factors like rising costs and declining public support for immigration. This has led to a decline in student interest in these countries, pushing students towards more welcoming destinations like the US, Germany, Italy, and Austria. The impact of political changes, like the election of a new government, can influence student mobility patterns. The decline in international student numbers is affecting not only education but also industries like tourism and hospitality that benefit from student spending.

To address these challenges, education providers and governments need to enhance the student experience, improve services, and balance immigration policies to consider both economic benefits and public concerns. Despite the obstacles, stakeholders can work together to attract and support international students effectively. The future of international education relies on collaborative efforts to create a welcoming environment for students worldwide.

Anticipated improvements in the geopolitical landscape following major national elections could lead to positive changes in global recruitment patterns by 2026. However, advancements in AI and automation may impact future immigration policies. Therefore, students planning for higher education should prepare in advance to navigate potential changes effectively.
