• Weird Islanders: The Podcast! - Episode 54 - Aatu Räty (with guest Jake from Skates at the Stakes)
    Nov 1 2024
Joined by frequent prospect watcher Jake from the Skates at the Stakes podcast, we remember Aatu Räty's surprise drafting and splashy debut for the Islanders before he became part of a massive trade. Once expected to be a Top 10 pick, Räty's stock dropped precipitously in his draft year and he fell to the Islanders in the second round, which seemed like a steal at the time. Scoring a goal in his first NHL game only reinforced that idea. But about a month later, he was included in a deal for All Star Bo Horvat that launched a thousand awful hot takes that have only gotten more laughable over time. Jake tells us what drove him to watching prospects, what his thoughts on Räty were at the time of his drafting and his trade away and just how likely it is that the forward finds another new home at some point. Plus, Mike makes a bold predication we'll have to keep an eye on (possibly many years into the future). Thanks again to Jake for coming on and remember to listen to he, AJ and Ryan (now all Weird Islanders: The Podcast! guests) on the Skates at the Stakes podcast. Note: This episode was recorded before the season began. Räty made the Canucks roster out of camp but was assigned to Abbotsford of the AHL on Oct. 16. Subscribe to our Patreon! • Islanders Anxiety - Episode 303 - Driven Up a Wall
    Oct 28 2024
Mike and Dan take turns ranting about the Islanders' week in which they were shut out (again), blew a bunch of leads (again) and generally did what they always do (again). In the span of five days they managed to get lose in regulation 1-0 after allowing just 11 shots, win in overtime after their best defenseman gave the puck to a player on the other team with a minute to go and then blow a 3-0 lead and lose again to the defending Stanley Cup champs in front of a dwindling amount of people while their media contingent spent more time complaining about not getting to talk to the coach pregame than anything that happen in the game. Meanwhile, fans want to believe there's a rift between coach and GM because it gives them someplace to direct their anger. In other words, it's just a normal week for the NHL's most abnormal team. Thankfully, no one but us is paying attention. In the second half, we discuss the attendance at UBS Arena and finish with our first Master Leaf Theatre of the season, which is just a small appetizer (we hope) of things to come. • Islanders Anxiety - Episode 302 - What Emotion to Feel?
    Oct 21 2024
Mike and Dan recap a week of good and bad, as the Islanders stay in the thick of the Metro despite some characteristically bizarre games. They start with Saturday night's home game against Montreal in which the nine-round shootout wasn't even the weirdest part. One person's "great atmosphere" is another's unsustainable, impossible parade of inexcusable bullshit, an Islanders' trademark over the last several seasons. A 1-0 overtime loss to St. Louis on Thursday had its own elements of weirdness, as did a rousing win over a wounded Colorado team on Monday. On the whole, the Islanders are where most people expected them to be. But how they got here is just as insane as it ever was. In the second half, we look forward to the first daunting back-to-back of the season and look in on the Leafs, where the coach wasn't happy at practice, half the fanbase isn't happy with him and the former captain is selling magical jewelry. • Weird Islanders: The Podcast! - Episode 53 - Deron Quint
    Oct 18 2024
Mike and Dan kick off Season Four with their first actual former Islander, as defenseman Deron Quint joins them to discuss his five games with the team during their 2007 stretch run, his long hockey career in the NHL and overseas and his new second career. Quint was brought over from Europe by Garth Snow with the Islanders in desperate straights to make the playoffs. What followed was an incredible run that Quint remembers well and fondly as one of the most fun times of his hockey life. Before and after that short stay, the New Hampshire native experienced a ton, like setting records in his rookie season with the Winnipeg Jets, moving with the team to a new market in Phoenix, uniting with the expansion Blue Jackets, and winning championships in Germany and accolades in Russia. Quint tells us how his perspective changed over the years and why his Islanders time is still so important to him. Along the way we hear stories about some of the stars he played with including Jeremy Roenick, Alexei Zhamnov, Teppo Numminen, Evgeny Kuznetsov and... Igor Shesterkin? We can't get away from that guy. Our eternal thanks to Deron for coming on with us and sharing his stories. We couldn't have asked for a better first ever Islander, and his generosity and memory (for games that happened in 2007 and beyond) is incredible. This is just the first of a whole season of great Weird Islanders coming up so don't miss them. Subscribe to our Patreon! • Islanders Anxiety - Episode 301 - Robbed of Joy
    Oct 14 2024
Mike and Dan recap the first two games of Islanders season, which were annoying, frustrating and disappointing after a summer of excitement. In their season/home opener against the Utah No Names, the Islanders played all their hits - blown leads, bad penalty killing, an overtime loss - leaving fans angry and discouraged. A busy 3-0 loss to Dallas in the Stars' home opener might have been a product of poor luck, but combined with the previous game, it extinguished a lot of the hope fans came into the season with. With familiar problems and the same party line about "having good starts" and "it's a new season," it was exactly the type of opening weekend no one wanted. In the second half, we look forward to two more road games in Colorado and St. Louis, and a home game against Montreal that, while not a "make-or-break" week sure feels like a make-or-break week. Can the Islanders take advantage of a couple of wounded Western Conference teams and right the ship. History says no, but we wait and see. But here's some actual good news: Weird Islanders: The Podcast! returns for Season Four this Friday. Subscribe to our Patreon! • Master Leaf Theatre Special - The Metronome of Professionalism
    Oct 10 2024
[Note: This episode originally ran exclusively at our Patreon page on August 21, 2024. As promised on the episode, since John Tavares was not signed to a contract extension before the Leafs' season began, the episode is now free for all to enjoy.] This summer, John Tavares was removed as captain of the Toronto Maple Leafs in favor of Auston Matthews. What followed a few days later was a cringy press conference at a restaurant and (predictably) a wave of even more cringe-inducing articles written by some of the stars of the Leafs Industrial Complex. Joined by actor, writer, podcaster and our friend Michael Paul Smith, we reinterpret these breathless columns in even more dramatic fashion, bestowing upon them the ridiculousness they deserve. Through Michael's emoting and our choices of cinematic music, we discover new classics such as children that don't exist (or getting used as cruel propaganda), new paths toward personal fulfillment, unfair dismissiveness, selfless acts of non-leadership and straight up lies. We also examine every excerpt and dissect just how insane they all are. Be sure to check out Michael's podcast, Ted and Michael Read Sketches Into Microphones. But that's not all. In the interest of equal time, we also speak with another friend, The Athletic's Arthur Staple, who lays out a bold and unlikely scenario in which Tavares returns to the Islanders should he hit free agency. It sounds crazy at first, but Art makes a compelling case that may make you actually want to see it happen. Just hear him out (and buy his wife Beth's book - The Snap: A Novel - available everywhere right now). Thanks to both Michael and Arthur for giving us their time and energy this summer. This is easily the best Master Leaf Theatre we've ever done and is exclusive to Patreon for right now. Should Tavares not be signed to an extension by the start of the season, we'll make it free for everyone. • Islanders Anxiety - Episode 300 - You're Not Coming to Six Flags
    Oct 7 2024
Mike and Dan discuss the waiving of Pierre Engvall (and others) ahead of the Islanders' season opener this week against the Utah Sister Wives. Putting Engvall and the six years left on his contract on waivers was a bold move by Lou Lamoriello but it illustrates just how the team has changed and how Engvall's signature brand of ineffectiveness can't be tolerated any more. The guys who "beat him out" for the jobs aren't on solid ground, either, but for now, they have the gig. In the second half, they "preview" the game against the NHL's most focused-group new team and the follow up game against Cup hopeful Dallas. Then we get into our Super Specific Predictions for the Islanders and the NHL, which speculates goal totals, articles written, contracts extended and more. Finally, we allow a few minutes to discuss what hitting the 300 episode mark means. Thanks so much to everyone who listens and reaches out to us to thanks to this goofball team. We've fostered this very healthy, creative space and we could not be more proud, satisfied and happy. Here's to 300 more (and Reese Witherspoon, please contact us!). Subscribe to our Patreon! • Islanders Anxiety - Episode 299 - The Cynic's Guide to Preseason Hockey
    Sep 30 2024
Mike and Dan "recap" the Islanders preseason so far including roster spot battles, empty intrigue and the mystery of Ilya Sorokin's status. With about 60% of their exhibition games over (of which Mike has watched zero minutes of, per his standard policy), the Islanders' are shaping up along expected lines. But a few players are vying for an open spot no one seems especially suited for, which might make next week's final cuts and waiver choices very interesting. They also discuss how Sorokin went from missing just "the first few days of camp" to missing essentially all of it while skating on his own away from prying eyes. It's a less than ideal situation for fans who just want to know what to expect, but it's par for the course under Lou Lamoriello. Finally, they examine Amazon's two upcoming forays into the hockey business and how one will make Thomas Hickey a big star and the other is unlikely to make new fans.
