He was described as a habitual criminal who, at times, would resort to violence. His first term in prison was at Carmarthen Prison where he served six months for housebreaking, next came seven years in Liverpool jail for manslaughter, this was then followed by a term of eight years in Dartmoor Prison for the crime of felony, and during his term at Dartmoor he had 124 breaches of discipline, where his punishments included, flogging, solitary confinement and spells of starvation diets.
