La loro grande popolarità, però, durò poco: si scoprì infatti che questi stivali tendevano a diventare appiccicosi e a sciogliersi con il caldo estivo, oppure a riempirsi di crepe con il freddo. L'instabilità del materiale costrinse quasi tutti i produttori di gomma a cessare presto la loro attività, eccetto Charles Goodyear, che trovò un modo di rendere la gomma quello che è oggi grazie al processo detto “vulcanizzazione”.
