  • Graduation & Fun Distractions
    Jun 3 2025

Penn and I have a daughter who is graduating high school and going to college in the fall. And I am doing totally fine, except the… chest pains… eye twitches… hair loss… (this is totally normal, right?) I process my emotions through preparation. I plot everything on the calendar and make all the Google Docs. Penn needs to process his emotions through, well… actually feeling them. He knows there’s a shift in our family dynamic coming and it’s making him sentimental.

In this episode of Laugh Lines, we talk about the emotional rollercoaster of parenting a graduating high school senior and some fun distractions that are keeping us laughing. We discuss the chaos of senior sleepovers, why I want to give squirrels hemorrhoids, and we hear from fellow parents navigating this bittersweet season. Whether you’re a fellow Gen X parent or just listening to hear how I almost got impaled by a gnome, this episode may make you laugh, cry, or develop an eye twitch too. Thanks for being here ❤️

  • How Did We Survive the 90s?
    May 27 2025

This week on Laugh Lines, Penn and I take a trip down memory lane with the most unhinged things Gen X did in the 90s. (Seriously… how are we even alive?) If you’ve ever gotten a late fee at Blockbuster or ridden in the back of a pickup truck without a seatbelt, this episode is for you. Welcome home. We heard from so many listeners who shared amazing stories: homecoming games with a live tiger from the zoo, going on cross-state road trips as teenagers, and even piling 20 college kids into the back of a U-Haul with a keg. (We survived but wow, we did some dumb stuff.)

Despite the chaos, there’s so much we loved about growing up Gen X. Penn and I discuss our own unhinged memories, take your stories from the laugh line, and even talk about the stuff we should bring back. (Are we not letting kids be as independent now?) Also stay tuned for our special Gen Z 90s translations at the end! Have a story for us? Leave us a voicemail at 323-364-3929 or write the show at podcast@theholdernessfamily.com. • How To Talk Back To Anxiety with Ethan Kross
    May 20 2025

If you’ve been here a while, you know your friend Kim walks with anxiety on a daily basis. I often have thought “if I could sleep through the night, eat enough protein, and manage my anxiety and emotions, I’d be unstoppable.” And that’s because anxiety has often stopped me — from resting, from focusing, from showing up the way I want to. My brand of anxiety can be debilitating at times. So how can you begin to manage anxiety and emotions?

This week we invited our new friend Ethan Kross on the podcast to help give us tips on just that. Ethan is a psychologist, neuroscientist, and director of the Emotion and Self-Control Lab at the University of Michigan. He’s also the author of Chatter and Shift, all about taking control of your emotions and the voice in your head. We discuss how distance your self-talk, mentally “time travel” and ways Penn deals with emotional flooding due to ADHD.

Stick around until the end when we take a call from the Laugh Line on all-inclusive resorts, talk about borgs, and Penn’s favorite new show, Game Changer with Sam Reich. What do you want to hear us talk about? Leave us a voicemail at 323-364-3929 or write the show at podcast@theholdernessfamily.com. You can also watch our podcast on YouTube.

Everybody needs to slow down! I especially lige the idea of starting with the small habits.

This podcast is so relatable and fun to listen to. There are moments of hilarity but there are also moments of deep emotion. Thought-provoking and fun, great for listening on my walks, while I'm cooking, in the car, and even with my kids (sometimes). Family and relationship thoughts, experiences, and advice.

I love listening to this podcast. So relatable!

I'm not one of those people who can do my work AND listen to a podcast at the same time, which is a real shame because I really enjoy podcasts ... so ever since I started listening to your podcast, my work has begun to suffer. That should be a star or two off but my boss isn't the one writing this review, so ..........

In the latest episode (re: hobbies), I have to say that you are the only other person I have heard who discusses a strong dislike for the word "should". I went through a phase (may still be going through it) where I would respond to all shoulds with an accusation toward the speaker of being a "should-pusher". It doesn't endear me to people, but just know that I get it and I'm glad that you spoke about it because now I don't feel so weird. Right?

So, yea, keep getting in between me and my work - I enjoy it, even if my boss may not.

Pausing work to listen to y'all

It's been a rough year, but I gotta say, stumbling upon the Holderness Family has been one of my favorite parts. I first saw their hilarious song parodies on Facebook a couple of months ago. I was very excited to see they were writing a book, which is how I found out about the podcast! I laugh, and sometimes cry, but I always learn a little something, and get to see things from a new angle. As a newlywed, I strive to have a relationship like Kim and Penn have as the years go by. I love that they share the tools that help them have such an incredible understanding of each other! Thank you so much for being you, and sharing so much of yourselves!

I just love this family!

I really enjoyed your videos and now your podcast. We have learned so much about the experience of living with ADHD from Penn. My son is ADHD and has been able to relate to Penn. Having a family of ADHD (myself, son, and husband) we feel for Kim because it's hard sometimes, but she has such a great approach to understanding it.

Loving the positivity and wellness

First off let me say I love you guys. Second I can not belive I am the first review on here. That can only be because everyone else has already started listening to you on other platforms, because you guys are great I actually started watching dude dad and came across The target husband's video and I discovered your family's videos and I was hooked from there. I have watched all your videos, "read" your book. Wich I am great full for the extra commentary on the audiobook and now for the past couple of days I have been listening to your podcast im up to the end of 2018. I listen to you ten hours a day while I'm at work. My wife and I both have a mixture of both your personalities and you have helped me understand not only my wife but myself. With your inspiration I have started down my own self help and personal growth journey. Keep it up and I can not wait to catch up on your podcast Thank you for everything you guys do. YOUR AMAZING

Okay, I love Penn & Kim, but this speaker was just next level with the knowledge. I think the only thing I didn't like about it is that he stole the show, but I will definitely be listening to this one multiple times. Great job! So glad I could find him through you! :)

By far, the best episode!
