Episode 8: A Comedy History Jem (Part One)

Welcome to the Lord of Adders Black fan podcast, where Michael and Ian explore the universe of cult sitcom Blackadder while diving off at the occasional tangent.

We kick off episode number eight with a Scene Stealer feature on Peter Cook, who lost his head in the very first outing of The Black Adder – but not before defining the landscape of British comedy as we know it.

All great TV comedy stories start with Peter Cook and our special guest’s is no exception. This episode includes the first of a two-part interview with Jem Roberts, writer of The True History Of The Black Adder and the official biographer of Fry & Laurie, Douglas Adams and other leading lights of comedy.

Here, Jem recounts some of the many rosy-cheeked caperings that occurred while researching his labour of love, such as being gifted with the unpublished Blackadder In Bethlehem script by Richard Curtis, revisiting unused sketches with Stephen Fry – and not being sued by Rowan Atkinson.

If you’re reading this, then one of us is on holiday or life has dropped a spanner in our usual clockwork schedule. Which is why it always pays to have a bonus episode or two at the ready!

This one contains our full interview with Simon Osborne, who played the wonderfully snotty Pitt The Younger in Dish & Dishonesty, the fast-paced opener for the third season of Blackadder.

Parts have already been included in Episodes 5 and 6, but almost half of the interview – like Baldrick’s trousers – has never been aired before.
