  • Summary

  • Hola, welcome to another episode of Legends of Spain. I’m profesora Daniela, and today, I’ll take you on a journey to the beautiful town of Teruel, where one of the most famous and tragic love stories unfolded—Los Amantes de Teruel, or "The Lovers of Teruel."

This is a story of two young people, Isabel and Juan, whose love for each other was undeniable, but they were separated by class, wealth, and family expectations. As you listen, you’ll hear about their struggles, their hopes, and ultimately, their heartbreaking fate.

The word amantes means "lovers" in Spanish, and it's a key part of this story. In fact, you'll notice that this word comes up a lot in classic tales of love and loss. Another phrase you’ll hear me mention is corazón roto, which translates to "broken heart," and by the end of the story, you’ll understand why that phrase is so central to what happens.

Juan and Isabel grew up together, and their friendship blossomed into deep love. But as often happens in legends, life had other plans. Isabel’s father, wanting a noble match for his daughter, demanded that Juan prove himself by returning after five years with great wealth. And of course, Juan, decidido—which means "determined"—set out to make his fortune. But when he returned, it was too late, and the outcome of their love is something that has echoed through the centuries.

I won’t give away all the details here because I want you to dive into the story and experience it for yourself. As you listen, take note of the Spanish phrases I use. Por ejemplo, "desgarrada" means "torn," which is exactly how Isabel feels when she’s forced to choose between her family’s expectations and her love for Juan.
