  • Mr Cruel 6 - The Murder of Karmein 1
    Jul 16 2024

This is the first in a series of podcasts about the enduring mystery that is the unsolved abduction and murder of Karmein Chan in 1991.

In this series, Eamonn from Melbourne Marvels and Jay from Whoismrcruel.com will discuss the fallout from this event by analysing contemporary media reports on it in the hope that it may give us a different perspective on the Mr Cruel mythos.

In episode 1 of this series, Eamonn and Jay dissect the very first media conference Victoria Police held on the crime, the day after she was abducted and also what was reported in The Age and the Herald-Sun on 14-15 April 1991.

As part of this discussion, Eamonn Jay discuss the ramifications of Victoria Police providing a 5 year old photograph of Karmein to the media, the fact that the media began to incorrectly report that all Mr Cruel attacks had occurred on school holidays as well as other items of interest.

NB: The use of copyright material in this podcast is for fair dealing for research purposes, for criticism and for reporting news. Melbourne Marvels is a non-profit blog/podcast that is researching the unsolved crimes of 'Mr Cruel'.

    Aug 4 2020
On 21st of October, 1978, 20 year old Frederick Valentich is flying a Cessna 182L light aeroplane from Moorabbin Airport to King Island. Not long after commencing the over water section of the flight, between Cape Otway and King Island, Valentich reports to the air traffic controller seeing a craft with 4 bright lights passing over his plane. The unusual craft returns and Valentich reports it behaving strangely by playing some sort of game with him, and travelling at such high speeds he could not identify how fast. Valentich reports that the craft is a long shape and has green lights. The conversation lasts 6 minutes before he declares that the object is not an aircraft. Suddenly all radio contact with Valentich's aircraft is lost and he and his cessna disappear never to be heard from again. Despite a massive rescue operation, no evidence is found that would suggest what happened to Valentich or his plane.
