About this listen

We discuss the movies we love and why we love them. We discover what these modern parables say about who we were created to be. Our hearts reveal a roadmap to our design, and the movies that resonate most are worthy of examination to identify the truth about the men our world needs, the men God designed us to become. Join us as we discover the God’s truth in the movies we love.Paul McDonald Art

  • What Will the Carrot Cost?
    Jun 1 2025

Coming up on the Men at the Movies podcast, we share our first ever live recording. JB and I discussed Click at a men’s retreat and how Michael’s character is a lot like us. He has a lot of pressures to try to balance, but he feels like he’s failing at all of them. He keeps looking forward for what comes next, and misses out on today. It’s like chasing a carrot, but what will it cost him and us to catch it?

    Questions

    • Where are you winning? Home? Work? Anywhere?
    • Where do you feel behind?
    • When was the last time you took a break?
    • When have you disappointed the one’s who matter the most? How?
    • How can you give yourself a break?
    • How have you shown persistence through tough times?
    • Where do you feel like your life is missing something? If you just had “this” (fill in the blank), then life would be good.
    • What is the carrot worth?
    • Where are you on autopilot?
    • What is the most important thing that you can change?

Paul McDonald talks with Greg Allan Martin about his calling as both a lawyer and an actor. They also discuss the show Shadrach and why it's a watchable series for the whole family.

The process of becoming a star

    Calling

    • You have something to say that needs to be said, an expression of the Kingdom.
    • Your calling will be ridiculed, downplayed, and dismissed
    • Discover a circle of like-hearted people

    Invitation

    • Invitation to come on stage-starts out terrifying, then becomes something that brings our hearts alive in joy
    • We need to give ourselves permission to accept the invitation
    • Our creativity is about bringing something into existence that doesn’t currently exist

    Enemy

    • Twists lies to sound like truth
    • He takes what God creates and distorts it
    • Goal is to get us to tap out and quit, to blow up our lives
    • He introduces the trauma/sadness/grief we need to become who we were meant to become

    Questions

    • What is your talent? Gifting? Calling? Purpose?
    • How has that been dismissed? Ridiculed? Downplayed?
    • In what ways do you step into sharing your voice?
    • Who are the like-hearted people in your life, the circle of people who love the same things, moving in the same direction?
    • In what ways have you been invited on stage? How have you resisted the invitation?
    • How do you express your creativity and gifting? What do you bring into existence that doesn’t currently exist?
    • How has your grief shaped who you became?
