My Mum Was Our Roadie with Alex Camp

By: My Mum Was Our Roadie
  • Summary

  • Before artists had social media, there was a golden age where bands pressed vinyl and hand-printed t-shirts…but what about the time in-between? Alex Camp is now a stand-up comedian but before that he toiled for years on the underground band circuit. They were so young they couldn’t even drive so his mum stepped up as their road manager (bless you Carole). 20 years later, the stories of Alex’s bands and others like them are lost to time. This podcast aims to collect an oral history of the late 90s & 2000s unsigned band scene by talking to the people who were there. New episodes fortnightly.

  • 5 | The Red Hot Chili Peppers Paradox w/ Josh Weller (The Kenneths, The Witcher and more) | My Mum Was Our Roadie Podcast
    May 16 2024

This episode, another great comedian joins the pod to talk about his experience being in bands as a youngster. Josh Weller is a unique comedian in that he makes consistently hilarious and viral videos that nearly all hinge around very specific musical observations. Not only that but he's a great stand up and his show "Age Against the Machine", a mix of storytelling ,stand up and musical sketches that chronicles his experience getting signed to a record label in his 20s, was one of the highlights of my visit to Edinburgh Fringe in 2023. Josh and I reflect on DJs, the talent gap, punk music, angering fan bases, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, mocking with love and many more aspects of music and comedy. This is a great chat and not one to be missed if you enjoy discovering the parallels between these two disciplines.

  • 4 | Chaos At Festivals w/ Dean Coughlin (The Mild High Club)
    Apr 24 2024

Our first comedian! Dean Coughlin is the first of hopefully many guests who I've met on the comedy scene as opposed to during my past life as a musician. Now, he's known as co-host of The Mild High Club podcast, streaming and live shows as well as an opener for Paul Smith, Dan Nightingale and more. However, he got his start in the Merseyside metal outfits Cthulhu and Codeca (that's two separate bands, not one epic name).

We talk about many things, including but not limited to; 8-string guitars, band dynamics, the juxtaposition between the image of metal bands and how nice they are, the chaos of festivals like Leeds and Download, and that warm fuzzy feeling you get when a place you've never been to before welcomes your band as if you're a local. Enjoy the episode, and check out Dean's comedy because he's one of my favourite acts on the scene at the moment.

  • 3 | Spray Painting CDs w/ Stef Ketteringham (Strobe 45, Shield Your Eyes) | My Mum Was Our Roadie
    Apr 11 2024

Our second guest joins the podcast, none other than underground hero Stef Kett of Shield Your Eyes, Reciprocate and many more. Here Alex and Stef reminisce about Strobe 45, Stef's virtually unknown, short-lived but incredible punk-funk project from the mid-2000s. They were Alex's favourite unsigned band of all time so he was pretty excited. Stef tells of how his bandmates knew nothing about what they were supposed to do but hounded out gigs wherever they could and rehearsed in bedrooms and even a school. Check out Stef's projects on his YouTube and we've linked to a few other artists mentioned on the pod below.
