  • Mortal Kombat The Journey Begins Animated Video (1995) Review - Old Man Orange Podcast 663
    Jun 30 2025

Spencer and Dave are going back to the total original Mortal Kombat movie from 1995! And no, that is not the classic live action film, this is The Animated Video cassette that came out to promote the movie. The Journey Begins is a mix match experimental cartoon that uses both traditional 2D animation and 3D cutscenes. Giving a short story to catch people up on some of the original characters and their backstories for the coming tournament. You definitely had to be there back in the day to really understand this video's proper impact. A time when there just wasn't a whole lot of merchandise and adaptations to have of what you loved, and you enjoyed anything you could get your mitts on.

In retrospect, the movie has some bizarre animation that does feel like a very experimental test movie. Some might say the CG is uncanny and terrible but for the time it's not too far off from Quest World, Reboot, and even that Donkey Kong Country Show. The movie itself is only about 45 minutes long, so a total teaser. But the VHS also includes some cool behind the scenes features of the live action Paul Anderson movie and ads for the games, Mortal Kombat Live show, and some interesting character bios. It's a video that if you are a die-hard MK fan, you should defiantly give this the ole watch. You can see it on YouTube and it also says it is on some special features on the blu ray of the first film.

  • Cutthroat Island (1995) Vintage Cinema Review - Old Man Orange Podcast 662
    Jun 26 2025

Spencer and Josh are going back to 1995 to watch what might be the biggest spectacle of any pirate movie ever made, Cutthroat Island. If anything, no other film out there might have as much explosives as this movie is packing. We discuss the movie in a retrospective review going through all the turmoils and issues that it had while being made and why it did not seem to make the big bucks it deserved at the box office.

It's not a perfect movie by any means and it does have some goofy dialogue throughout it, but it is still one hell of a thrilling ride. Just like the big explosions in the end, this was also the final flick of Carolco Pictures. Really marking the end of a major era in cinema. And sadly, we lost the Arnold Schwarzenegger and Paul Verhoeven film The Crusade in the process. Cause there could be only one, and money was already fueled into Cutthroat Island.

Directed by Renny Harlin, the guy who did Die Hard 2, Cliffhanger, and Deep Blue Sea and starring Geena Davis in the leading role, which she carries very well and delivers throughout. We also got ole Matthew Modine as the second in command, comic relief character. Which sadly is a little off and does kind of feel like a second-rate Carey Elwes. Rounded off with Frank Langella as the heavy, providing a great pirate villain to chew some scenery even with the silly lines he sometimes gets.

  • Parasite Eve (1998) Retrospective Review - Silent Evil Podcast 10 - Survival Horror RPG
    Jun 23 2025

Spencer and Cameron are going back to PlayStation 1, 1998 style with one of the most unique gaming experiences one can have and a style that has never been duplicated in all the years that follow. We are talking all about the Survival Horror RPG from Squaresoft, Parasite Eve, staring the ever-classic female protagonist. Aya Brea. A story sequel to the 1995 book and 1997 adaptation movie of the same name.

This story starts off in New York on Christmas, with Aya Brea, a police officer attending an opera and all hell breaking loose. This game is like a Japanese version of Die Hard and Lethal Weapon. Combining a police investigation with science-based mutant-like creatures using the mitochondria ATP that we all learned from biology class back in the day. The story is killer and keeps you locked in through the whole journey. The graphics are top notch for the era, and each new chapter has a completely unique style and look. To top it all off the gameplay is a traditional turn-based RPG but with a mixed run around feature. Complete with level ups and gun upgrading that gives so much personal variety for everyone's different types of play.

The game comes in at the right length without ever wearing out its welcome. If that wasn't enough the game has a fantastic replay new game plus with EX mode and then a challenge tower with the Chrysler Building too. 77 floors of continual punishment. We go through it all and talk about our latest experience going through this game. On both original hardware and emulation. A game that Square really needs to bring back and if all they did was give Parasite Eve 1 and 2 the Tomb Raider 1-6 Remaster treatment. That would be more than enough to get new and old folks to enjoy this cult classic masterpiece.

So, come join us for the run through retrospective review, as we deep dive into the lore, gameplay mechanics, and give a retro review on our modern experience. Let us know your thoughts on the game, survival horror titles, and what we should play next.

Spencer and Ryan are talking all about the new Predator animated anthology movie, Killer of Killers. Up now on Hulu and Disney Plus and made by the same creators as the last Predator movie, Prey, Dan Trachtenberg and Micho Robert Rutare. The story follows 3 different eras of warriors, a Norse Viking Grandma, an Edo period Samurai, and a WW2 fighter pilot. After each one's struggle and battle with a Predator. The Winners are brought to the Predator home world to duke it out in the ring. Thunderdome style! Just an excellent action movie all around. • The Last Unicorn (1982) Vintage Cinema Review - Old Man Orange Podcast 660
    Jun 16 2025

Spencer is joined by his ole comic book making buddy, Jack Foster once again to talk about the great joys of vintage cinema. This time they travel back to 1982 and rewatch a fun filled animated classic, The Last Unicorn. A movie that hits more now as adults than it did when we were kids. This is also the last cinema release movie of Rankin and Bass, the ones of all the stop motion Christmas Classics like Rudolf and Frosty. Based on the book of the same name by Peter S. Beagle who also is the screen writer of the film, to keep it as accurate to his initial vision as possible. Other fun facts of this movie are that it is animated by the proto-Japanese team that would become Studio Ghibli in time. Very cool. Makes sense why this movie just looks so damn good. Sadly, like so many fantasy movies of the 80s, it just didn't do well initially at the box office. Having to resort to time in the video store and creating the cult classic following like so many other films of the time. Films like The Dark Crystal, Legend, Dragon Slayer, Labyrinth, and the Black Cauldron to name a few.

We do take a moment to get to our review, talking about creative projects, what we both have been working on, and just having a grand time catching up, so if you want to jump ahead to our full Review on The Last Unicorn, jump to the hour mark.

  • Mortal Kombat 11 Story Part 2 - Classic Gaming Review - Old Man Orange Podcast 659
    Jun 11 2025

Spencer and Dave finish up their Mortal Kombat Story Konquest with Part 2 of MK 1's tale, the Khaos Reighns Expansion. After all the time travel, inter dimensional multi-verse junk, and just characters coming back but with a twist, we enter the chaos realm and take a journey that is somewhat reminiscent to the Arnold Schwarzenegger and Steven King movie, The Running Man. It's fun and interesting, yet with some of those goofy moments and story choices you just have to roll with.

  • The Nice Guys (2016) Review - Old Man Orange Podcast 658
    Jun 7 2025

Spencer and Ryan are talking all about the 2016 action comedy, detective film from Shane Black, The Nice Guys. Which might be the greatest 2010's movie in our book. It's damn near perfect. With a fantastic 1977 era story in the Los Angeles area, hilarious and witty dialogue, great characters all around, and filled with the top-notch violence too. The look is awesome too and really makes you want to be in Hollywood during the 70s. We can't say enough good things about this flick and sadly, it was one of those ones the flew under the radar and just didn't make the impact it needed in its initial release to continue forward with a sequel or two. But here's hoping!

  • Mortal Kombat 1 Story Part 1 - Classic Gaming Review - Old Man Orange Podcast 657
    Jun 2 2025

Spencer and Dave are back to finish off this Mortal Kombat modern era Quadrilogy, with the latest story line from Mortal Kombat 1 (Always confusing title choice) Part 1. The game has a cool 70s Shaw's Brother like kung fu movie aesthetic and focuses heavily on those martial arts style characters. Which is defiantly a neat look to the world.

Of course, Fire God Liu Kang has attempted to shift things in a more positive balance and for some reason old Raiden didn't think ole Liu needed Katana Kahn by his side in this cannon story entry. But we all knew that Shang Tsung and company would be up to their mischief at some point. There are both some cool new ideas being used here, like Miliana being the head princess but then some goofy stuff too like no Hanzo Scorpion. Overall, if you take the game at face value and just go along with the story, you will defiantly have a good time.

It's a fun classic adventure in the cinema like world of MK. Hopefully in the future sequels they will back off from the time travel, multi-verse silliness and just carry on for a solid round of continual stories without always having to press the refresh button like they have done in MK9, 11, and 1.
