My mom is Japanese and I was born there, then worked in Japan 1969-71 as a missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and 1980-83 as a US Air Force lawyer. I had a short trip to Kunsan Air Base and walked around the city and spoke to several people in Japanese. Korea had 100% tariffs on import of Japanese TVs and VCRs, to help Samsung and LG develop against competition from Sony, Panasonic, etc. As a military sttorney, I was constantly prosecuting airmen involved in smuggling Sony home electronics into the Korean black market.

Japan imported its written language and Buddhism from Korea in the 600s, and Korean is the only language that has any relationship to Japanese, described as having the same basic grammar with totally different words. When the US Navy forced Japan to open to the West, Japan and Korea were comparable technologically. Japan got a jump on Korea in becoming industrialized, and emulated the European imperialists by conquering less advanced countries like Korea and China. It was exactly like Germany invading France and Poland.
