 In this episode of Historically St Pete, St. Petersburg Museum of History executive director Rui Farias welcomes reporter, editor, best-selling author, and fantastic rock musician Dave Scheiber! Says Farias: "In what seems like a century ago, I started a career in journalism at the then St. Petersburg Times. I was hired the summer after high school to be a copy clerk, running around the newsroom doing whatever the news editors and reporters wanted or needed. From there I advanced to sports clerk, pretty much doing the same for sports department, but also creating that beautiful page of 2 C – all the agate, or statistics that was one of the most highly read pages of the Times. Eventually as I progressed in journalism school, I was given a shot at sports reporting, climbing the latter from high school football to the fishing column, to eventually the beat writer for the original version of the Tampa Bay Rowdies. News reporting, and especially sports reporting has definitely changed since I was at the Times in the 1980s. But during that period of the 1970s and 1980s, the Tampa Bay area was blessed with some fantastic sports teams, characters and stories that would fill three daily newspapers in this area. Joining us today is someone who I was very fortunate to work with, and who lived that time with the St. Petersburg Times, spending over 30 years with the paper.
