Social Media, Friend or Foe? Never have we as a society ever been so connected. However, the adage, ‘so close but yet so far’ can be applied to the hugely popular Podcast, Sweet Bobby, where a young lady was subject to catfishing for almost a decade. Simmi, Kiki and Manusha consider if the victim was naïve . They try to unravel what was the motive behind the catfisher and how it appears that the law is unable to keep up with the speed of online crimes. They discuss if the police needs to retrain or be given more resources to enforce protective measures and deter potential online criminality. The podcast also cites, the popular Netflix series, ‘The Tinder Swindler’ in terms of how the main perpetrator of online deception appeared to be lightly reprimanded. It is easy in hindsight, to judge someone else’s frame of mind. Any of us could fall for these traps if we were in that situation. The motives of the catfisher are also extremely hazy. Was it control, power, manipulation, sadism, jealousy or did they have a narcistic streak? One suggestion in the podcast is based on a parallel with Othello, that catfishers simply do what they do because they can and no motivation is needed. The presenters consider what Sweet Bobby says about the nature of 21st century relationships and centrality of internet based communication. Our guest is Daksha Mistry who provides practical advice across age ranges to be more conscious and risk adverse when sharing or connecting online. Its not like we were not warned about the perils of the Internet. An Internet meme about Internet anonymity began as a caption to a cartoon drawn by Peter Steiner and published by The New Yorker on July 5, 1993, it read, "On the Internet, nobody knows you're a dog". Social media is a powerful tool but we all must be cautious and hold awareness to its potential risks.
