She Runs Ultras

By: Meghan Gould
  • Summary

  • She Runs Ultras is about (yup, you guessed it) running ultras. Lots of other running podcasts out there are full of gear & race reviews and interviews with the experts telling unrelatable stories about their record breaking times and super human feats. Now…don’t get me wrong, I’ve learned some great stuff from those podcasts...But what about those of us that aren’t getting paid to do this? Those of us that are mid to back of the pack runners? And those of us that have never won a damn thing? What was out there for us? Yeah, I couldn’t find it - so I decided to make it! And it just so happens that I’m getting geared up to start training for some races in 2021. So throughout this series, I’ll share what really happens when a typical, non-professional runner takes on the challenge of running an ultra. Got some races planned for this year? Let’s train together. From the emotional & physical ups and downs, to the details of my actual training plan, and the excitement (not to mention nerves) that build as race day gets closer...I promise not to hold anything back. So whether you’re already a member of the ultra community or if you’re just ultra curious...Hit subscribe and let’s do this!

    Nov 22 2024

In this episode, we’re tackling a common challenge: feeling stuck in confusion about your training and racing goals. If you’re letting indecision slow you down, this is your wake-up call!

    Key Takeaways:

    1. Plan Your Year: Outline your races, prioritize them, and map out weekly training objectives.
    2. Think Big Picture: Avoid week-to-week planning—focus on long-term goals.
    3. Get Clarity: A detailed plan answers key questions like mileage, training focus, and priorities.
    4. Balance Training with Life: Account for work, family, and other commitments to avoid burnout.
    5. Don’t Skip the Process: Big goals, like your first 50K, demand a solid plan for success.

  • Ep. 247 - How To Build A Solid Base For A Year's Worth Of Races
    Nov 15 2024

In Episode 247, we’re diving into the essentials of building a solid running base as you prepare for your 2025 race calendar. After planning and mapping out the races and training season, it’s time to focus on creating a strong foundation for the months ahead. Base building is a dedicated phase, typically taking 12-16 weeks, where you work on establishing endurance, consistency, and low-intensity stamina. This period is separate from your official race training plan and serves as the groundwork, helping you gradually prepare for the higher-intensity weeks to come.

We'll answer the question, "How long does it take to build a base?" and provide guidance on structuring your base phase, including how to set your weekly run schedule, select your workout types, and gradually increase mileage. You’ll hear why a consistent routine and patient ramp-up are key to building a strong base, and we’ll touch on the benefits of integrating strength and mobility work. Plus, stay tuned for details on our upcoming training plan workshop, where you can refine your approach and ensure your 2025 season gets off to the right start!

If you've been contemplating this challenge...

I highly recommend this podcast to those who are thinking about training for an ultra. Start at the beginning and get a comprehensive view of skillful mindset, practices, and big-picture perspective. I am loving listening to this while training. I find her blend of the high-functioning stuff with her quirky wisdom (stuff one has to have lived through to be able to really impart on to others in a meaningful fashion) so inspiring on my own journey to trail ultras.
