  • Why You Hear What You Hear on the Radio - Interview with Arvid Hokanson, Director of Audience at KUOW
    Mar 14 2024

I had the pleasure of sharing the airwaves with Arvid Hokanson, director of audience at KUOW and an original member of the KMIH Radio Club back in 1993! In the interview I got to learn how he and his team research listener behavior and tailor what content goes when in order to keep people listening more often and for longer. Arvid has worked at KUOW for 23 years as a talk show producer and even interim program director and chief content officer. His career in public radio made him an especially relevant and valuable interview to have in the studio. Take a listen.

  • Mr. Randolph - Episode 1 - The Teacher's Lounge
    Feb 6 2024

The inaugural episode of The Teacher's Lounge features the one and only, Jeff Randolph. He was an easy pick for me. As mentioned in the episode's intro, he was my AP Psychology teacher my junior year of high school. What makes Mr. Randolph stick out among his colleagues to me is his authentic dedication and respect for student engagement in his classroom. The ability to take what is asked by a student and make it valuable to the class course as well as very entertaining is what allows his psychology classes to gain great scores on the AP exam each and every year. In our short interview we discussed his interest in broadcast journalism out of high school and how his college education instead provided the roots of a career in teaching.

  • Aaron Goldsmith Visits 889 The Bridge (EDITED Interview)
    Feb 5 2024

Thinking of the all time greats of Seattle Mariners broadcasting, your mind probably rings back the name Dave Niehaus. Just a few window panes to the right, a mainstay now carries on Niehaus's legacy in the booth calling Mariners games. A St. Louis kid, Aaron Goldsmith never thought of broadcasting until moments after graduating with a history degree from Principia College in Illinois. But after numerous (and arduous) years making his way up the rungs of the broadcasting ladder, bouncing from an independent baseball teams to minor league teams like the Triple A Pawtucket Red Sox, he'd receive the experience and improvement that put him (and to his surprise) in Seattle in 2013. Coming up on his eleventh season casting play-by-play for the M's, Goldsmith has definitely cemented his spot in Mariners broadcasting.

In our in-person interview, Aaron and I got to chat about his broadcasting journey, why he enjoys local broadcasting compared to national events, the keys to mastering mechanics and "feel" on the air, why he didn't take a lucrative position as lead broadcaster for the St. Louis Cardinals, and much much more.

  • An Interview with Root Sports Broadcaster, Business Consultant, and Author Jen Mueller
    Jan 4 2024

I had the wonderful opportunity to talk sports business, conversational skills, and how both of them intertwine in this interview with Jen Mueller. Her experience as a sideline reporter and post-game on-field reporter in her time working for Root Sports has made her one of the most recognizable faces in Seattle and put her in the biggest moments. But Mueller is so much more than that. She is an author and business consultant who tackles improving relationships through the common love of sports in a corporate setting as well as communication strategies that any professional should master. Her baking show, I cook you measure, is one of her recent endeavors where she pursues her passion for cooking with athletes in the kitchen.

  • 2 Hour Jam Sesh with Nick Mautone - October 26th, 2023
    Oct 27 2023

In the wise words of Nick Mautone, "It's calm." In this long live show completed on an irregular schedule for MIHS, Nick and I got to dive into a large group of songs. Every decade starting from the 1950s to 2020s was spanned (except the 80s...). From the influences of Miles Davis to the impact of alcohol and being under the influence creates the best art, we talk about the awesome parts of their favorite music. It's a long one, so sit down and break it into bite sized chunks.

  • 889 Alumni Max Tanzer Returns to the Air
    Oct 17 2023

On this episode of Breakfast on the Bridge, I sat down with "Mariner Max" Tanzer to discuss his journey as a broadcaster and play-by-play man under the Minnesota Twins organization and his predictions for the 2023 ALCS and NLCS series.

As a longtime baseball fan, Max spent years as 889's lead Mariner analyst, "Mariner Max." Along with his baseball shows, he spent hours on the microphone calling football games and creating imaging for those broadcasts. After graduating from Ithaca College, Max is now down in Fort Myers, Florida, calling play-by-play for the Single-A affiliate of the Twins, the Mighty Mussels.
