Splash Stories chats with John Douglas celebrating the 20-year anniversary of milestone Trashcan Sinatras album Weightlifting & previewing his debut North American Tour kicking off October 1 2024 showcasing original material and new recordings of fave Trashcan Sinatras' material.

Joined for West coast and Midwest dates by Lily Vakili of Vakili Band & for East Coast dates by award-winning singer-songwriter Lauren Calve & two special shows with fellow Trashcan Sinatras Frank Reader and Paul Livingston in Seattle, with Reader also joining Douglas in LA.

"'Weightlifting' was a milestone record in our journey. It took us a long time to make that record due to various hilarious sidetracks, including adventures in Japan with us as a six-piece band, and many many strung out, aimless days and nights in our adopted home of Kilmarnock, Scotland, a mad detour attempting to record in Hartford, USA (skillfully avoiding the nightly gunshots), and even a meeting with the landed gentry in Ayr County Court, where our banishment from the land of honest toil was finally ended," John Douglas.

"We returned from all those adventures with songs - songs of love, loss, redemption, forgiveness, bravado, friendship, wisdom, peace and tranquility. Songs that we swore ourselves to... and here we are 20 years on and it looks like we somehow built them to last. Somehow, from the chaotic depths, we found ourselves at the top of our game. It’s a miracle of a record."

Splash Stories caught up with Mary Byker well known for his work as the lead singer of Gaye Bykers on Acid, Pop Will Eat Itself, Pigface and Apollo 440 and as a record producer and DJ/MC. We spoke just before he headed off to pick up his new pair of glasses before the start of the Gaye Bykers on Acid's Intermittent Fasting Tour which kicks off 5 Sept 2024 .
GBOA released two indie chart-topping singles, “Everythang's Groovy” and “Nosedive Karma” on In-Tape records before being signed to Virgin Records. In 1987 they released their debut LP “Drill Your Own Hole” which was the soundtrack to an ambitious film of the same name, & toured the US and Europe. During this time Mary made friends with Chicago’s infamous Cynthia plaster caster, played Glastonbury Festival, Roskilde, Supported the Red-Hot Chilli Peppers and undertook a memorable European tour with the Ramones and supported Motorhead in Hammersmith. This was followed by the Jon Langford produced critically acclaimed album “Stewed to The Gills” and Mary's favourite track: Harmonious Murder. Mary also played The Splash Club with Hyperhead. Splash Stories welcomes Chris Connelly talking from his home in Chicago for a memorable musical memoir amongst the streets the guts and the character of Edinburgh. His latest 8 track album 'The Lives and Loves of the Serial Homesick, Vol. 1' is a paean to his city- and a beautiful and profound one at that - capturing the essence of his love for it through his music his art and his heartfelt lyricism.. Each album comes with its own drawing created by Connelly himself.

In Connelly's words : " the album is rich with strong feelings of then and now, memories that may or may not be accurate, locations, events, friends and lovers. I want the listener to walk with me quietly through endless days and nights, through the streets of Edinburgh in the early 1980s, over the tenement rooftops, up the hills with cans of Red Stripe and a well stoked hash pipe. Sitting in the Wee Red Bar, Bannermans, The Gilded Balloon, or the Royal Circus. Playing endless nights of music with my beloved Fini Tribe, dancing at the Hoochie Coochie Club.
I miss it badly and have never felt at home anywhere except Edinburgh, where my soul continues to walk the New Town streets and climb the hills,"

Welcome to another Splash Story. This month Ben Steadman & Diamond Dave are joined by Kav Sandhu of Happy Monday's who joined Splash Stories from New York for a superb and heartfelt interview to talk about his Blitz Vega Band with the Smith's bass player Andy Rourke, his passing and plans to tour the album ‘Northern Gentleman’, which was released on what would have been Andy's birthday January 17 2024 . The single Love City was released in May 2023.

Propelled by rattling beats, pulsating buzzsaw bass and the elegantly wasted rush of classic ‘70s NYC punk, ‘Love City’ surges towards a frenetic finale and shows that Andy Rourke kept on expanding his horizons and delivering essential new music until the very end. Kav's assertive vocals lead the charge, his lyrics exalting the excitement and opportunities that come with his time living in the heart of LA.

Kav told Splash Stories "Love City is about experiencing your own individual journey but ultimately ending up in the same place / viewpoint as the people you meet along the way. You can look at it simply as the magic of a great night out where everything falls into place or a life journey which shapes the way you think. But hopefully it makes you smile a little, it’s a happy song.”

Love City joins the previous singles Disconnected ,Strong forever, LA Vampire and Lost & Found in previewing the ‘Northern Gentleman’ album. Titled in honour of Andy - the 10-track record documents the duo’s time together: a record informed by their creative connection, their brotherhood and the spirit of pushing on in the face of overwhelming challenges (Andy's illness & Covid lockdown) and which features Johnny Marr contributing on guitar.

Dale Crover shares his Splash Story with myself and Diamond Dave and he's one hell of a laid back good humoured guy. He tells us he's fabulous ! He had a rough time of it sometime back having to undergo an emergency spinal surgery operation so that's good to hear. Not for the faint hearted but he's a Melvin right!

On tour with Ministry after the Pandemic led to two drummers on The Tarantula Heart album with influences by PIL's Flowers of Romance and a new way of working and putting the tracks together and having "really long songs on it." There's reminiscenses on Kiss Gene Simmons, Atlantic Records and a whole bunch of insights.

Crover mentioned he felt fortunate to work with King Buzzo whom he describes as "a great, idiosyncratic songwriter and a superb live performer". He added that working with Kurt Cobain, Mike Patton and Buzz had been great - all three knew what they wanted " I just sit at the back, add a bit of direction and help steer the ship."

Your Splash Stories hosts Ben Steadman & Diamond Dave caught up with the whirlwind that is Frank Turner for his Splash Story.
After disbanding post hardcore band Million Dead in 2005 punk folk rocker Frank Turner is well on the way to performing 3000 shows . He releases his self produced 10th album Undefeated - "a record about survival & defiance with a sense of fun "on May 3 2024. The album was recorded at his home on Mersea Island Essex backed by The Sleeping Souls Released through indie label Xtra Mile Recordings & it draws inspiration from Black Flag,Counting Crows, Descendents, The Pogues, Elvis Costello & Billy Bragg.
Frank made waves following George Thorogood & The Melvins lead by playing 50 states in 50 days in 2022.
In 2024 Frank is attempting the first ever MVT World Record attempt for the most gigs played in different cities in 24hrs!
Every show is in a Music Venue Trust associated grass roots venue and associated with an independent record store.
