In this episode of Teachers Off Duty, the crew gets real about one of the wildest parts of working in education—student fights. From chaotic cafeteria scuffles to hallway showdowns fueled by Snapchat drama, the teachers share their most jaw-dropping stories about breaking up fights, navigating middle school mayhem, and how digital drama is making things even messier. They discuss the difference between boy fights and girl fights, the dangers of being a bystander, and how peer pressure and group chats often escalate things before the first punch is thrown.

They also talk about the emotional toll it takes on teachers who are expected to break up brawls while avoiding lawsuits, staying safe, and protecting the students involved. Plus, the group shares some heartfelt moments about kids who look out for each other and what it means to build trust and maturity in students. As always, it’s equal parts hilarious, honest, and a little chaotic—just like real life in the classroom.

From Jay’s “girl dad” life to Anna’s desk-climbing Dead Poets Society moment, the trio shares the genius hacks and hilarious fails that keep their classrooms (and sanity) intact. Whether it’s using UNO cards to track participation or rage-screaming with students as a brain break, this episode is packed with real-life strategies that actually work—plus a few that didn’t.

They dive into how AI tools like ChatGPT are changing the game for both teachers and students, and how they’re learning to work smarter not harder by embracing technology without losing the heart of teaching. You’ll hear them swap stories about student manipulation, mystery shopper behavior systems, the power of handwritten work in a tech-heavy world, and what happens when a student can’t read their own handwriting. It’s the real teacher talk you didn’t know you needed.

Hey all, I hope this finds you well! I appreciated this episode so much. I taught at a year-round, private school throughout the entire pandemic of March 2020 up until this past September. Our school board made the decision to stay open throughout the pandemic and serve children of first responders that were on the medical frontlines everyday. I taught Pre-k and while the kids were happy to be at school, it was a wild and stressful time. Listening to all of your stories was cathartic to hear since I definitely understood pandemic teaching. I hope all is well, stay safe and healthy! - whitney_barnett

It’s so awesome for you guys to speak out and tell all of the insane things that teachers have to deal with. I never would’ve known about these things before if it weren’t for you guys. This is my favorite podcast and I listen to it ALL the TIME! ♥️♥️♥️ love y’all so much

This is the 1st podcast I've ever listened to & I am NOT disappointed! I found Bree through Reels on Instagram & discovered she was a part of a podcast with other teachers. Although I am not a teacher,I have spent 20+ years in healthcare & the stories are so relatable. People are leaving healthcare for the same reasons they leave teaching..bad pay & bad treatment. Keep up the good work :)

I started off just listening on my commute to work (Massachusetts Middle School) and now catch myself listening in during my breaks and free time! Love these guys!

Love that they all have a little segments and I love how they all flow together so seamlessly. So fun to listen to while I am cleaning and cooking or when I am just trying to have a laugh.

So good !

I wish I would’ve known that admin won’t support me when I have a behavior problem. If I have a student who continues to act up after I’ve tried everything in my classroom, I go to our APs and try to get support. They turn back around and blame me saying that I don’t do enough. All they do is give a “stern talk” to the kids. There are no consequences and that’s so defeating as a teacher :( I love y’all’s energy by the way! :)
