Dr. Wilner would love your feedback! Click here to send a text! Thanks!

Many thanks to Temple Grandin, PhD, for joining me on "The Art of Medicine with Dr. Andrew Wilner." Temple Grandin is a Professor of Animal Science at Colorado State University and perhaps the world’s best-known person with autism.

Temple Grandin has written nine books on autism and regularly speaks at autism conferences. She is devoted to helping people with autism minimize their limitations, discover their niche, and become happy and productive members of society. Her story is so unique that a movie about her life, “Temple Grandin,” was released in 2010.

Temple describes her challenges growing up with autism, the unwavering support from her mother and aunt, and how she channeled her love of animals into a successful career. She discusses the importance of early intervention for speech delay, learning turn-taking and other life skills, and the possibility of making friends through shared interests like horseback riding, music, and model rocketry.

During our 30-minute conversation, Temple offers advice for parents of autistic children and some tricks to minimize sensory overload. She also stresses the importance of searching for hidden medical problems such as acid reflux, toothaches, or urinary tract infections that may go undiagnosed and account for worsening behavior.

  • Physician Family Financial Advisors: An interview with Nate Reineke, CFP
    Oct 27 2024

Dr. Wilner would love your feedback! Click here to send a text! Thanks!

Many thanks to Nate Reineke, CFP, Primary Advisor, Student Loan Specialist, and College Planning Specialist at Physician Family Financial Advisors. He also co-hosts his company's podcast.

While physicians are relatively high earners, they start earning late in life and often have little financial training. Nate's firm helps physicians manage their financial planning. Physician Family Financial Advisors have served physicians exclusively for the last 20 years. They avoid conflicts of interest by not selling financial products and advise physicians based on a monthly subscription fee.

During our 30-minute program, Nate discussed why early retirement may not be the best choice, the effect of children on financial planning, and how to avoid physician burnout. We touched on "lifestyle creep" and the problem of excessive spending. Nate also mentioned locum tenens as a potentially less stressful work option.

  • "All That Really Matters": an interview with author David Weill, MD
    Sep 29 2024

Dr. Wilner would love your feedback! Click here to send a text! Thanks!

Many thanks to David Weill, MD, former Director of the Center for Advanced Lung Diseases and the Lung and Heart-Lung Transplant Program at Stanford University Medical Center. Dr. Weill is the author of the new novel “All That Really Matters” and the memoir “Exhale”. He’s working on a 3rd book to be published next year.

I read “All That Really Matters” and couldn’t put it down. Although I am not a transplant surgeon like the protagonist, we definitely shared some similar experiences during our training and early careers. The novel leads us through the complex world of organ transplants, with the author as an expert guide. Even those without a medical background will have no difficulty following the plot and may perhaps identify with a character or two. Dr. Weill told me that the novel was a vehicle that allowed him explore the moral and ethical issues involved in human organ transplant.

During our 30-minute discussion, Dr. Weill filled me in on his 20 years of life-saving organ transplant work. Although immensely gratifying, this 24/7 activity wreaked havoc on his work/life balance. Finally, Dr. Weill left his position as Director of the Transplant Program at Stanford to become Principal of the Weill Consulting Group, which focuses on improving the delivery of pulmonary, ICU, and transplant care. This transition allowed him to move back to his hometown of New Orleans, continue to help improve the transplant system, and provided an opportunity for him to write.

During our interview, we also discussed the practicalities and rewards of writing fiction, his long-term goals, and how he gets the writing done.

It was indeed a pleasure interviewing David Weill! More about David can be found on his website: www.DavidWeill.com.

  • "Music and Mind: Harnessing the Arts for Health and Wellness:" an interview with Renee Fleming
    Sep 1 2024

Dr. Wilner would love your feedback! Click here to send a text! Thanks!

Many thanks to Renee Fleming, Grammy Award Winner, recipient of the National Medal of Arts, and renowned soprano who has brought the experience of classical music to millions of fans. In 2023, the World Health Organization appointed her as Goodwill Ambassador for Arts and Health. Renee is also the editor of a new book: "Music and Mind: Harnessing the Arts for Health and Wellness."

During our 20-minute discussion, Renee discusses her upbringing in a musical household. Her parents were high school voice teachers, and it was natural for her to sing and learn to play a musical instrument. As time passed, she became more passionate about learning to sing. Other than music, she stated that her only other career choice was to become the First Lady President of the United States! But it wasn't until her late 20s that she discovered she had a "beautiful" voice.

When she had somatic pain that impaired her singing, she discovered that scientists were studying music and the brain. After a discussion with Frances Collins of the National Institutes of Health, she curated the book, "Music and Mind: Harnessing the Arts for Health and Wellness." Renee has become a cheerleader for the scientific study of music and the concept that "the arts should be embedded in healthcare."

Renee Fleming also wrote another book, "The Inner Voice," about learning to sing. It guides young singers and their families through the process of becoming a professional singer.

You can purchase "Music and Mind" or "The Inner Voice" on Amazon.

    Aug 18 2024

Dr. Wilner would love your feedback! Click here to send a text! Thanks!

Many thanks to Adam Elnekaveh, author of "Rebuilding Adam: The Tragedy." Before his accident, Adam's life was on track. He was in top physical shape and preparing to market a new fitness app.

It all changed while he was on vacation with his high school best friend in Thailand. While exploring Phuket on rented motorbikes, he suffered a life-threatening accident. His buddy found Adam lying in a pool of blood with a severe head injury. Admitted to intensive care, Adam spent ten days in a coma. His injuries were so bad that he was mistakenly pronounced dead.

During our 30-minute interview, Adam recounts his emotional and physical struggles as he spent grueling months in rehabilitation. The loss of independence was one of his most significant challenges. Adam's parents played a crucial role in his care and recovery.

Adam endorsed swimming and tennis as two valuable activities that helped him “rebuild Adam.” He is now working full-time and writing books about his journey.
