  • Ann Patchett Revisits Bel Canto
    Nov 7 2024
Ann Patchett burst on the scene with Bel Canto twenty three years ago. Bel Canto was not her first novel, but many still consider it to be her best (although she disagrees). This week she releases an Annotated Edition of Bel Canto and in it she rereads and notes her triumphs and mistakes on every page. Seriously. A great novel, a great writer making insightful comments on her own writing (in her own handwriting)…if you love reading, writing or Ann Patchett, this is a HUGE treat. In this episode, the first installment of our conversation with Ann, we talk to her about the inspirations behind Bel Canto, and so much of what she thinks she could do better if she wrote it today. Listen and nerd out with us on the writing experience. Podcast is almost better than the books!

One of my favorite authors and I adore the Thursday Murder Club series. Kate, you nearly lost me with your suggestion of Tom Cruise for the movie version. Uncharacteristically wrong. Check out the Facebook groups which are casting the movie!

Book lovers will love this, and less avid readers will be motivated to pick up a book

Kate & Charlie Gibson talk about books and interview a wide range of authors, many you’ll know, several you’ll be thrilled to learn about. So fun and informative. Recently they visited the Library of Congress and that was a fascinating listen. You know Charlie from Good Morning America (etc) and you’ll be delighted by his daughter Kate who is whip smart and funny.

Expand your reading horizons!

I can't say enough good things about this podcast - it's interesting and helpful and insightful. Kate and Charlie ask for suggestions for how to make the podcast better, and I wouldn't change a thing! I've recommended it quite a few times, but always with the warning - don't listen unless you want to greatly expand your "want to read" list! I never would have found "This is Happiness" without Kate and Charlie, and it was my favorite book (of the 60) that I read last year. I recommended the book to one of my book clubs (yes I'm in 2), and never has a book been more universally loved. Thank you for expanding MY reading horizons! Keep up the awesome work, and thank you for all that you do to make this podcast happen!
