The Case of Edinburgh's Last Public Execution of 1864

  • Summary

  • The Case of Edinburgh's Last Public Execution
News of the Times Episode 437 | 1864
In today’s episode we are in Ratho, some 14 miles outside of Edinburgh in 1864. Young Isabelle brown, working as a cook at the manse has been dating local chap, George Bryce.

Bryce, who works as a carter, is known in the village as being a bit slow. He also likes to drink – a habit that Isabell does not approve her.

Her very good friend who works as a nurserymaid in the same manse distinctly disapproves of Bryce as a suitable beau for her good friend and shares her views. Isabell, listening to her friend, breaks off her relationships with Bryce.

What then infolds is a horrific murder that rocks the community and would bring some 20,000 people, many travelling from afar, to witness the execution of Bryce.

We take a look at the background, the crime, and the verdict in today’s episode of Edinburgh’s Last Public Execution.

Today’s further particulars story, also from 1864, is a bit creepy – a widow is being stalked, by letters sent to her, by her very dead husband. She recognises his handwriting, and he seems to know all about the mundane things she does daily. It goes on for years.
    Hosted by Robin Coles.
