  • 3-1. The Family of 'Imran (Al-'Imran آلِ ﻋِﻤْرَانَ ) verses 1 to 34
    Jun 20 2024

This episode marks the beginning of Surah Ali-'Imran, a Medinian surah which has 200 verses. The first 34 verses' overarching theme is the reiteration that Allah is the source of divine revelation. Having a belief in Allah as the only Lord and Islam as His only accepted religion. Reminders that scriptures are a source of guidance. In this episode, we are reminded of Allah's Might, the differences between precise and elusive verses, prayers of the knowledgeable, punishment of the disbelievers, Allah's help at the battle of Badr, temporary pleasure, everlasting delight, worshipping of only One God and to follow one path, that is Islam. Also contained in these 34 verses, are mentions of the people who are rebellious and those who reject Allah's judgement and infinite power. In this episode, we are warned of taking disbelievers as guardians unless as a precaution against their tyranny. Before we end, the Quran reminds us of Allah's Infinite Knowledge, the accountability for Good and Evil, of obedience to Allah and His messenger and who are truly the blessed people.

Sypnosis from The Clear Quran book by Dr. Mustafa Khattab:

This Medinian surah takes its name from the Family of ’Imran mentioned in verse 33. Like the previous surah, it reiterates the fact that Allah is the source of divine revelation and affirms the belief in Allah as the only Lord and Islam as His only accepted religion. The story of the birth of Mary, John the Baptist, and Jesus is mentioned, along with a challenge to the Christian perception of Jesus (‫)ﷺ‬. The surah also touches on early battles against the Meccan pagans with emphasis on the lessons to be drawn from the Muslims’ defeat at the Battle of Uhud, which took place in 3 A.H./625 C.E. The virtue of being mindful of Allah is highlighted at the end of this surah and the beginning of the next one.

  • 2-10. The Cow (Al-Baqarah الْبَقَرة ) verses 261 to 286
    Apr 12 2024

Three main themes appear in the revelations. Charity, interests and debts. God tells us how charity will multiply our rewards when the charity is sincere and for His cause. Oppose that to charity that is not rewarded in the sight of God because it was done to show off. These are wasted rewards. God commands not to donate things that are worthless even to our own eyes! And to be careful of the devil discouraging charity with the prospect of poverty. God reveals that it is better to give charity in private than openly. God also forbids the taking of interest and treat it as a war wage against Him! Last but not least, in this episode, and the last few six very long verses of Surah Al-Baqarah, we hear of how taking a debt is best done with writing of a contract and nominating witnesses. And as for collecting of debts it is to be done with empathy. This longest surah in the Quran ends with a powerful supplication in verse 286,which asked Allah not to place a burden on us like the one He has placed to the people before us.

This Medinian sûrah, which takes its name from the story of the cow in verses 91–121, details the main concepts of the previous sûrah, with emphasis on the qualities of the believers, disbelievers, and hypocrites; Allah’s power to create and resurrect; the enmity of Satan towards Adam and his descendants; as well as Allah's covenant with Moses and the Children of Israel. Several rulings are given in regards to marital, relationships, bequest, jihad, fasting, pilgrimage, donations, debts, and interest. Unlike the next chapter, which focuses on the Christian perception of Jesus, this sûrah dedicates a sizable portion to Jewish attitudes and practices.

  • 2-9. The Cow (Al-Baqarah الْبَقَرة ) verses 234 to 260
    Apr 4 2024

We will hear more of God's commands on marriage and divorce; what to do and not to do as a righteous believer of God's law. We will hear for the first time in the Quran, the story of Prophet Samuel appointing Saul as king of the Israelites despite objections from the Israelites chiefs. Saul's army was tested by God with a drink from a river and God gives victory over Goliath and his warriors through David, who was made king and prophet. In this episode, we also get to hear revelations about Jesus, son of Mary and how he is supported by the holy spirit by Allah. Other themes on spending in God's way, believing in one true God and of free will in accepting Islam are mentioned here in the Quran. Last but the least, the ending of this episode, we will get to hear two interesting stories. One, about Abraham and the arrogant king who questioned God's power to give life and cause death and secondly, the story of Ezra, whom God caused to die for a hundred years and bringing him back to life.

    Mar 29 2024

Many revelation themes are covered in this part of the Quran. We are almost into the last 3 episodes of Surah Al-Baqarah and I am feeling rather sad that it is coming to an end soon. Nevertheless, let's explore this part of the Quran from verse 204 to 233 where the themes are on God's admonishment of the hypocrites, warning us once again of satan as our greatest enemy, a severe punishment for the children of Israel who have been given clear signs and yet turn their back from God's messages.

God also remind humanity that life as a test and that prophets were sent to us with scriptures to deliver good news and as warners. Our faith will be tested in this life and charity should start from home with our parents, relatives, orphans, the poor and the needy travellers.

You will hear of Allah's command to make fighting obligatory and that it is a sin to fight in the sacred months. Intoxicants are forbidden, charity and donation, the treatment of orphan are encouraged, the rules of marriage, intimacy and divorce are detailed, in this part of Surah Al-Baqarah.

So, do look out for them as you listen to the recitations and its translation.

Allah warns those who hide the truth of His revelations and who trades guidance for misguidance. Allah spells out what true righteousness looks like - the believe in one God, the last day, believing in angels, the books and the prophets, to give charity to relatives in need, orphans and the poor and to pay alms-tax. The law of retaliation is laid out (of blood money), also of wills and bequests upon our deaths, the rules of fasting is elaborated upon and what comprises of excellence in Ramadan, being conscious of God's nearness to us and intimacy during the nights of Ramadan for those who are married. The topic of divorce and the intracities that comes along with it is also laid out. Allah also warn against injustice, spelling out what is true righteousness, etiquette of fighting enemy combatants, resisting oppression, piligramage rituals and Allah's advise to us to pray for best of both worlds (our life on earth and of our life in the hereafter). Truly within just these 29 verses, so much information to guide humankind is laid out. Look out for them as you listen to the recitations.

In this episode, God reminds us to have patience in difficult times. We are to believe that those who are martyed in the cause of God are still alive though we perceive it not. And God will certainly test us with a touch of fear, famine, loss of property, life and crops. So, we need to be patient in difficult times. We will also hear the ritual of pilgrimage between the two hills, God's great signs of His creation of the heavens and the earth and the great sin of associating others with Him. We are given the scenario of people in hellfire who are greatly remorseful, disowning each other, wishing to have a second chance. God also gives a warning against Satan, as he is our greatest enemy. God informed us not to blindly follow the faith of our forefathers who does not believe in submitting to only one God who is our creator. God gives example of disbelievers who are willfully deaf, dumb and blind. Towards the end of this episode, you can hear God's commands on forbidden foods for Muslims such as carrion (which is decaying flesh of dead animals), blood and swine.

In this episode, we continue with the same message to the Israelites, reminding them of Allah's favour upon them and to submit to the truth of the scriptures coming from the Quran. This episode takes you through the time of Abraham a.s in Mecca, his prayers, raising the foundation of the sacred house and of submitting to only one God. The verses also speak of prophets that came before and the many messengers who came with the same message of worshipping to Allah alone. A new direction of prayer, an order to face Mecca in prayer, the truth about the prophet, God's order to face the sacred mosque and Allah's favour upon the believers are some of the messages you will find in the next recitation in this episode. So look out for them.
