Diana “Dede” Yazzie Devine has been the recipient of numerous awards and honors including Valley Leadership’s Woman of the Year, Phoenix Business Journal’s 25 Most Admired CEOs, and she has been inducted into the ASU WP Carey School of Business Hall of Fame. Dede has been the CEO of Native American Connections since 1979 whose mission focuses on improving the lives of individuals and families through Native American culturally appropriate health, affordable housing, and community development services. Dede joins Brian Cannon to speak about the strengthening of our community bonds and the power of integrating body, mind and spirit.

After serving as a corrections and parole officer, it became clear to Aaron Cheatham that his community could benefit from focusing efforts and resources towards helping people transition from incarceration back into society. He gets that opportunity everyday as the Reentry and Transition Manager for Hickman’s Farms. Aaron and Brian Cannon chat about the value of human dignity, the continuing efforts to expand the reach of the program and eliminating the many barriers to success while giving our returning community members the opportunity to flourish within the company.

Deacon Joe Herrera was raised on the Cochiti Pueblo Tribe Reservation in New Mexico with English as a second language. His grandfather took him to his first Catholic Mass in Latin on the reservation. He was ordained a deacon in the Archdiocese of Santa Fe in 2003 and appointed by the Archbishop as Director of Native American Ministry. Deacon Joe now serves in Scottsdale at St. Patrick Catholic Community. He and Brian Cannon chat about the intersection of Pueblo and Catholic rituals and beliefs, the richness of diversity, and whether or not Disneyland is really the happiest place on earth.

Brett W. Matossian, the ReEntry by Design founder, knows how difficult life after incarceration can be. After being arrested for the first time in his life, Brett spent 16 months in a Maricopa County Jail and an additional two and a half years in the Arizona Department of Corrections.

After Brett’s release in September 2013, he saw the challenges of reentry firsthand and noticed one of the biggest issues was that people are not properly prepared for reentry. While many organizations help with specific areas of reentry, such as employment or housing, he saw a need for a more comprehensive whole person approach - one which incorporated all aspects of life.

He and Brian Cannon chat about his journey and how people can partner to make re-entry successful.
