The Deck

By: audiochuck
  • Summary

  • For years, some law enforcement agencies have replaced the faces of traditional playing card decks with images of missing and murdered people and distributed those cards in prisons hoping inmates would come forward with information needed to crack these cold cases wide open. Now, audiochuck is dealing you in. Each week, we will be working with investigators and family members to bring you the details of some of the coldest cases from around the country in hopes that someone listening can finally bring these victims the justice they deserve.

Our card this week is Jefferson "Jeff" West, the King of Diamonds from Mississippi.

On July 2nd 2018, Jeff West, a 46-year-old father of four, got into an argument with his mom in the backyard of her house. In the heat of the moment, he apparently stormed off into the woods surrounding her property… and has never been seen again.

  • Agustin Chacon (King of Clubs, Texas) & Marshall McCarthy (5 of Hearts, Texas)
    Jan 29 2025

Agustin Chacon, 25, and Marshall McCarthy, 37, were both shot to death in their homes in the same Odessa, Texas, neighborhood on the same winter night in 1982. While Marshall’s case nearly had too many leads for investigators to chase, Agustin’s hardly had any. A language barrier between police and Agustin’s roommates made things even harder. Now, more than 40 years later, one cold case detective is working through the different challenges in each case as she tries to solve both of these men’s murders.

    • If you know anything at all about the murders of Agustin Chacon or Marshall McCarthy, or knew Agustin Chacon in Odessa in 1982, contact Detective Lauren Gonzales at 432-335-4926, or contact the Odessa Crime Stoppers if you want to remain anonymous, at (432) 333-8477.
    • To listen to the episode we mentioned on Eula “Kay” Miller visit here.

Please share this episode with anyone you know who lives in Odessa or may know someone who does. We have generated a transcript for this episode in Spanish as well as a digital flyer in the hopes of getting folks to come forward in Agustin's case which you can find here.

Our card this week is LaQuandra “Shavonne” Slater, the 4 of Clubs from Michigan.

    • If you know anything about the disappearance of LaQuandra “Shavonne” Slater in Flint, Michigan in December of 2016, we urge you to call Flint Township Police Detective Lacey Lopez directly at 810-600-3266 or you can leave an anonymous tip with the Crime Stoppers of Flint & Genesee County by calling 1-800-422-5245.

Big Fan

I personally love all of their content, excited to see where this podcast takes us! big fan of bringing awareness to cold cases / missing people and at the very least letting their families know their loved ones have not just been lost in a stack of cases.
Stay safe!!

Good, but Could be Better

I have high expectations of Ashley because I believe she is a trailblazer. Her stories, narration, and research are excellent. She tends to have trivial things that really ruin the podcast (not just this one. It's part of the trademark, I suppose! 😂)
The ads and their placement really ticks me off, especially because we don't have the option to subscribe and pay for ad-free content. Also, the intro at the beginning of each episode is unnecessary, and half a minute of theme music is just obnoxiously unnecessary! It's not even good music! Of the hundreds of podcasts I've listened to, only ONE had a stunning intro/theme song. It's the Culpable podcast, and the theme song is by the Dirt Poor Robins. You can find it on YouTube. If yours is not of that caliber, half a minute is far, far too long.

Su

Ashley I can't thank you enough for covering Su's murder. I grew up in Saugus so I remember this vividly and I also happen to know Marlene personally. every single thing the detective said about her is 100% the truth. Marlene is one of the nicest sweetest strongest women I have ever met in my life. I hope that this gets off someday because Marlene really does deserve answers as well as Su deserves Justice.

Extraordinary

I stumbled across "The Deck" after I hade binged every episode of "Crime Junkie" and was in desperate need of my true crime fix. This has it all! The narrater keeps your attention and has a way of telling these extreamly intimate grusome events while being completly respectful of the victums memory and surviving family and friends privacy/feelings. Someone needs to tell these stories and she has been anointed to be that person.
