  • Britain's Got Talent Finalist and Panto Legend Steve Royle
    Oct 23 2024

Biography Steve is an actor, writer, comedian, juggler, a "Gillard award" winning presenter on BBC Radio Lancashire and now a finalist on ITV's Britain's Got Talent 2020. Steve most recently completed his 17th consecutive pantomime at The Grand Theatre, Blackpool (and his 22nd Pantomime in total) and was also made an honourary member of The Friends Of The Grand in 2016 for his services to the theatre. Last year he starred, to critical acclaim, in the World premier tour of "Naturally Insane: The Life of Dan Leno" and is taking the show to the West End (Criterion Theatre). In 2015 he performed 16 nights at The Manchester Arena as part of the "Phoenix Nights Live" show, helping raise well over £ 5 million in the process. He also appeared at the London Palladium twice within a month later that year when he performed as part of the TV show "Sunday Night At The Palladium" and as warm-up for "One Night With Neil Diamond". He spent many years as "Special Guest" on Dave Spikey's Tours and has supported several other top comedic names including Peter Kay, Mick Miller, Roy Walker and The Lancashire Hotpots! He was also the first comic, ever, to act as "Warm-up" for The Royal Variety Show featuring Take That, Rod Stewart, Barry Manilow and Meatloaf. He is a regular Television "warm-up" for programs such as "The Rob Brydon Show", "A Question Of Sport", "Mastermind" and even survived over 150 episodes of "The Price is Right" with Joe Pasquale a few years ago. Steve's first love, however, is Stand-Up and it is a job that has taken him all over the world: Cruises in the Med, Norwegian Fjords and the Caribbean, hotels and comedy clubs in Hong Kong, Dubai, Crete, Cyprus, Turkey and Japan. He is a regular headline act at The Comedy Store and other "alternative" venues and has several television appearances to his credit. "Phoenix Nights", "Max And Paddy's Road To Nowhere", "Peter Kay's Britain's Got The Pop Factor...", "Stand-up Britain", "Give Your Mate A Break", "The Afternoon Show", "Talk Of The North", a "Real Radio" advert, straight acting roles in "The Things You Do For Love" and "Magnolia", and despite being one of the North West's healthiest males, a medical insurance commercial for "Medicash". He was also featured on the Granada Programme "Behind The Scenes" and "That's Entertainment" (with Cannon and Ball) and was voted "Entertainer of the Year" at the inaugural Red Rose Awards. For over 12 years Steve could be found in the guise of "Mad Edgar" the court jester at Camelot theme park where he presented over 2000 "Crazy Juggling Shows". For years, the father-of-three has been encouraged by family and friends to audition for Britain's Got Talent, but didn't expect to get far. However in August 2020, Steve became the first act sent through to the final, impressing judges with his comedy juggling routines. For 51-year-old Steve, this is the latest journey in a rich history in the world of entertainment. Steve previously charmed the judges in the audition round, with his impressive juggling skills, using his mouth to juggle ping-pong balls before juggling three guitars. His semi final performance was a huge change for Steve, who is used to feeding off an audiences live reaction - the show had to be pre-recorded this year due to the coronavirus pandemic, and social distancing, and saw Steve perform to a huge Zoom wall of viewers, as well as the shows judges. The judges unanimously chose to send him through. As Ant and Dec confirmed the news, Steve said it was "crazy and unbelievable" that he had made it through, although he left the entire panel in stitches. The grand final took place in October 2020 and Steve was placed third overall. Which was a wonderful conclusion to an amazing run on the show. And Steve is looking forward to seeing you on tour next year. So watch this space.

Alex is the vicar of St Matthews church in Burnley you can order his book via this link https://brownsbfs.co.uk/Product/Frost... and Follow him on X @alexdjfrost Women over the age of 40 are by far the biggest and the most active demographic in the Church of England. But while a huge proportion of any given congregation will likely have experienced menopause, it still remains largely unacknowledged, unspoken and unaddressed. It is almost entirely taboo as a topic of conversation in churches. Writing with refreshing frankness, popular blogger and broadcaster Jayne Manfredi uses biblical reflection, prophetic storytelling and prayer to journey with those experiencing “the dreaded m word”. Facing the menopause head-on, and by turns hilarious and moving, Waking the Women offers a challenge to destigmatize women’s experiences by opening up the conversation around midlife and ageing in the church.

    Oct 2 2024

About Alex Alex is the vicar of St Matthews church in Burnley you can order his book via this link https://brownsbfs.co.uk/Product/Frost... Follow him on X @alexdjfrost About Karen theologian with a passion for taking bodies seriously as starting places for theological reflection and construction of reimagined theologies. After a career in secondary education, I undertook an MA in Theology and Religious Studies at the University of Nottingham (2013) with a thesis on Marian Temple Typology. This lead me to doctoral study at the University of Exeter (2016) for a PhD in Theology and Religion. My doctoral thesis was focused on the emerging field of Trauma Theology and the ways this intersects with the Eucharist and the body of Mary. This work was eventually published as Broken Bodies: The Eucharist, Mary, and the Body in Trauma Theology (SCM Press 2018). After my doctoral work, I held a research fellowship at Durham University where I developed my theological research into bodies and their existence in digital spaces. This led me to a permanent role at Sarum College where I led an MA in Christian Spirituality. During this time, I began a new research project into the impact the experience of reproductive loss, particularly miscarriage, might have on how we construct theology. This work was published as The Dark Womb: Re-Conceiving Theology through Reproductive Loss (SCM Press, 2022). Alongside this research, I have continued to push forward the field of Trauma Theology in both the UK and internationally. This has included the publication of two edited collections with Dr Katie Cross—Feminist Trauma Theologies: Body, Scripture, Church in Critical Perspective and Bearing Witness: Intersectional Perspectives on Trauma Theology—both published with SCM Press. I have also written the first introductory survey of the field of Trauma Theology. I am the Academic Dean at Westcott House - an Anglican Theological College in Cambridge. I teach liturgy, trauma theology, sacramental theology, and pedagogy. I also teach Gender and Christian Theology for the Divinity Faculty at Cambridge University. I supervise a range of PhD projects.

  • Female Bodies, Immaculate Forms - A God Cast exploration with Prof Helen King.
    Sep 20 2024

About Helen What makes a woman? How far do bodies set our gender? Immaculate Forms focuses on the history of the breasts, clitoris, hymen and womb. I've worked on the history of medicine and the body for many years, following a PhD thesis on ancient Greek concepts of menstruation. Since then, I've published on the reception of ancient medical ideas about the female body, menstruation and birth up to the nineteenth century. It still amazes me that ancient ideas about women survived for so long, despite changes elsewhere in how the body was understood. I've held research fellowships in Cambridge and Newcastle, worked for 8 years in Liverpool, and then for 14 years at the University of Reading. In 2011 I became Professor of Classical Studies at the Open University and I am now Professor Emerita there. I've been a visiting lecturer at Mount Allison University, University of Victoria BC, and University of Texas, as well as a Fellow at the Netherland Institute for Advanced Studies, and a Visiting Professor at the Peninsula Medical School, where I taught the history of dissection to medical students. 'Illuminating, thoughtful and scholarly' FINANCIAL TIMES 'Mind-blowing, fascinating stuff' BBC WOMAN'S HOUR 'Delightful, timely and critical' Cat Bohannon, author of Eve 'With unrivaled expertise and a wealth of classical and contemporary detail, the author weaves historical knowledge of medicine, anatomy, literature, art and religion into a narrative that surprises, informs, excites and frequently amuses' Adrian Thatcher, author of Vile Bodies Throughout history, religious scholars, medical men and - occasionally - women themselves, have moulded thought on what 'makes' a woman. She has been called the weaker sex, the fairer sex, the purer sex, among many other monikers. Often, she has been defined simply as 'Not A Man'. Today, we are more aware than ever of the complex relationship between our bodies and our identities. But contrary to what some may believe, what makes a woman is a question that has always been open-ended. Immaculate Forms examines all the ways in which medicine and religion have played a gate-keeping role over women's organs. It explores how the womb was seen as both the most miraculous organ in the body and as a sewer; uncovers breasts' legacies as maternal or sexual organs - or both; probes the mystery of the disappearing hymen, and asks, did the clitoris need to be discover
