    It's an EmMajority Report Thursday! She speaks with Adam Hanieh, development studies academic based in the UK, to discuss his recent book Crude Capitalism: Oil, Corporate Power, and the Making of the World Market. Then, she speaks with Greg Stoker, co-host of the Colonial Outcasts podcast, to discuss Israel's recent offensive into Lebanon. First, Emma runs through updates on the release of Jack Smith’s new brief on Trump’s Jan 6th case, Elon’s secret funding of GOP PACs and candidates, Biden-Harris disaster response to Helene, climate change, Harris polling, Israel’s expanding offensives in the Middle East, the devastation of Gazan families by Israel, Facebook’s suppression, the Longshoremen strike, Jordan Neely’s killer, and the presidency of Claudia Sheinbaum, before parsing a little deeper through Jack Smith’s Jan 6th briefing, including his approach to SCOTUS’ ridiculous immunity qualifiers and some extra insights into the day of January 6th itself. Adam Hanieh then joins, briefly touching on his lived experience in the Middle East before diving deep into the central role that the evolution of fossil fuels has played in shaping Western hegemony over the past century and a half, from the rise of coal directly fueling the growth of the British Empire, and well through the “transition” to oil (really more of an addition than transition) and the rise of US Empire. Expanding on this latter point, Hanieh walks Emma through the rise of the oil industry in the mid-20th Century as a product of monopoly, with near-complete vertical integration in an industry dominated by seven companies (five of which were American), also touching on the major role oil reserves in the Persian Gulf played in the evolution of the Cold War, as the US stepped in for dwindling British and French colonial power in the Middle East, establishing a strong alliance with the Saudi regime before Israel’s success in the 1967 war added another major US proxy in the region, with even greater control over the Suez Canal – two relationships that remain central to US interests with the ongoing push for the Abraham Accords. After expanding on the role of the US in bolstering instability and insecurity in the region to secure their influence, Adam wraps up by unpacking the evolution of OPEC and its role as a supposedly decolonial institution headed by a major US-ally and authoritarian regime in Saudi Arabia. Greg Stoker and Emma tackle the rapid expansion of Israel’s ongoing military campaign into a full-scale regional conflict, with Israel launching a full-scale terror campaign across Lebanon before advancing a typically collectively punitive bombing campaign against Hezbollah personnel, as well this week’s Iran-launched barrage on Tel Aviv. Stoker continues, tackling the glaring parallels between Israel’s ongoing invasion of Lebanon and their complete failure in the 2006 war, parsing through the difficulties Israel faces in constantly warring with decentralized guerrilla factions, and exploring Israel’s potential responses to Iran’s controlled assault. Wrapping up, Greg and Emma tackle the U.S’ role as a behind-the-scenes broker between Iran and Israel, and assess the devastating impact Israel’s bloodthirst has had on its economy. Sam and Emma speaks with Manisha Sinha, Chair in American History at the University of Connecticut, to discuss her recent book The Rise and Fall of the Second American Republic: Reconstruction, 1860-1920. Professor Manisha Sinha then joins, diving right into the major expansion of the typical Reconstruction time frame in her work, with the 1865-77 period failing to incorporate the initial challenge for interracial democracy in the South or the decades of challenges to the progressive project of Reconstruction that were required to overthrow this effort fully, and exploring the mythologizing of this era as an abject “failure” and the “Lost Cause” revisionist history that plays into. Expanding on the importance of understanding the project to unwind Reconstruction, Professor Sinha tackles the role of the Gilded Age and the late 19th Century revolution in Industrial Capitalism in pushing a shift in the Republican Party from Lincoln to anti-labor, laisse-faire liberal Republicans aligned with southern capitalists, all but abandoning the abolitionist project, stepping back from the South as domestic racial terror campaigns and targeted political violence ran wild. After touching on the particular crackdown on the public and civic institutions in the South – via both state and vigilante violence – and expanding on the role of economic populism in bolstering the white supremacist project against Reconstruction, Manisha walks Sam and Emma through the direct relationship between the anti-Black and anti-democratic violence of the era and the then-ongoing project of imperialist expansion and the genocide of Native Americans. Wrapping up, Professor Sinha tackles the glaring parallels with today’s fight for democracy and against White Supremacy, particularly regarding party politics and the Supreme Court, and centers the importance of knowing what you’re fighting against. Emma speaks with Jeff Schuhrke, assistant professor in labor studies at SUNY Empire State University, to discuss his recent book Blue-Collar Empire: The Untold Story of US Labor's Global Anticommunist Crusade. Then, she speaks with Seamus Malekafzali, freelance writer and journalist, proprietor of the Seamus Malekafzali newsletter on SubStack, to discuss the recent Israeli offensive into Lebanon. First, Emma runs through updates on the indictment of Eric Adams, Netanyahu’s visit to the UN, Israel’s devastating offensives in Lebanon and Gaza, election spending, the GOP’s anti-Haitian attacks, US-Israel aid, Harris’ cozying up to crypto, Lina Khan vs. AI, Mark Robinson, and Hurricane Helene, before parsing a little deeper through the beautifully idiotic actions outlined in the fed’s Adams indictment. Professor Jeff Schuhrke then joins, diving right into the history of the AFL-CIO’s internal cold war and the havoc it wreaked on the institution’s organizing capacities, stepping back to outline the start difference in organizing of the then-separate AFL and CIO during the union boom at the peak of the Great Depression in the 1930s, with the Congress of Industrial Organizations taking on a grassroots approach, organizing across the spectrum of the working class to improve class consciousness, including among the growing communist factions in the US, and thus rapidly and drastically expanding their base, unionizing massive corporations, and establishing many openly-communist-led unions, all nationwide, a strategy directly contrasted by the American Federation of Labor’s establishment and anti-communist tact of this era. Moving into the 1940s, Professor Schuhrke explores how the post-war period, between the overwhelming backlash to a wave of strikes in 1945, the growth of an anti-communist government-backed military industry, and the onset of the McCarthyist Red Scare, saw a complete inversion of the growing labor power of the last decade, with full-scale communist purges and the GOP’s takeover of Congress crippling both the numbers and the rights that had so bolstered labor, resulting in a decimated CIO limping to join the AFL in 1955. From here, Jeff walks Emma through the rapid expansion of the AFL-CIO’s anti-communist aims, as funding poured in from the State Department to sponsor an international effort by the labor federation fundamentally conflating anti-communist fear-mongering with labor organizing, be it through worker training or illegal, mafia-backed intimidation practices, putting any attempt to unify the working class to the side as labor took a back seat to US empire, with union rates reflecting exactly that. They wrap up the interview by tackling what we can learn from this period of corruption and degradation as the US finds itself amid a labor renaissance. Séamus Malekafzali then walks Emma through the past few weeks of Israel’s terror campaign on Lebanon, first tackling the brief retaliatory attacks from Hezbollah in late August following Israel’s assassination of commander Fuad Shukr that preceded Israel’s escalation, before diving deep into the material impact of this offensive, between the wide-scale terrorism of Israel’s rigged pagers and communications devices, to their following record-setting bombardments in South Lebanon. After stepping back to explore how Israel’s offensives in Lebanon and against Hezbollah have been central to the IDF developing their tactics of collective punishment, Séamus wraps up with how these tactics have devastated South Lebanon over the last week, pushed the population into a complete crisis, and what it means for the future of the Lebanese people and Zionist expansion. Sam speaks with Sharon Lerner, writer covering health and the environment for ProPublica, to discuss her recent piece entitled “EPA Scientists Said They Were Pressured to Downplay Harms From Chemicals. A Watchdog Found They Were Retaliated Against.” Then, they speak with Ari Berman, national voting rights correspondent at Mother Jones, author of Minority Rule: The Right-Wing Attack on the Will of the People—and the Fight to Resist It, to discuss the recent attempts by Republican legislatures and voting commissions to change rules ahead of the 2024 election. First, Sam runs through updates on Israel’s offensive on Lebanon, ProPublica’s report on Blinken’s coverup of Israeli war crimes in front of Congress, Harris’ polling, Senate races, the execution of Marcellus Williams, a Haitian non-profit’s case against Trump and Vance, Florida’s education bans, corruption in Eric Adams’ administration, the InfoWars auction, and the FBI report on dropping violent crime everywhere except anti-LGBTQ hate, before parsing a little deeper through Secretary of State Antony Blinken’s active coverup in front of Congress, and John Kirby’s poor attempt to address it. Sharon Lerner then joins, first stepping back to reassess her year-long coverage, beginning in 2022, of the system of management intimidation and pressure set up by the Trump Administration EPA’s “New Chemicals” department, pushing scientists tasked with assessing the impact of new chemicals on human health and the environment to overlook issues, avoid deeper investigation, and even remove notes on them from any official reports, all serving to expedite corporations’ ability to get these chemicals to market regardless of safety concerns. Lerner and Sam then look to the structure of the EPA as a whole, tracing how this active pressure trickled down from executives to lawmakers to management before looking to the recently released report from the Inspector General, outlining in broad strokes the system of intimidation and retaliation, as they unpack the slow-walking of any major change to the administration under Biden’s presidency, and how that can change. Ari Berman then sets his targets on Georgia as he walks Sam through the state GOP’s overwhelming effort to pre-emptively rig every step of the electoral system in the lead-up to the 2024 elections, with a particular focus on replacing the election boards with election-denying cronies to changes in mail-in ballot eligibility. After briefly touching on the role of RFK’s ongoing ballot shenanigans in further threatening mail-in-enfranchisement – particularly in Wisconsin and North Carolina – Berman and Sam tackle an ongoing legal case out of Mississippi that has the potential to risk mail-in ballots nationwide if it makes it to to the Supreme Court before November, wrapping up the interview with a conversation on the need for Dems to emphasize communicating voting rights, encouraging voting, and challenging this effort head-on. And in the Fun Half: Sam first unpacks yesterday’s state-backed killing of Marcellus Williams, walking through the myriad issues ignored by the Missouri government and Supreme Court in his case, the overwhelming push to stay the case, and his son’s reflections on the day of his death. Bernie Moreno takes on abortion and accidentally alienates 50% of his base, Dan Osborn absolutely kills the PR push ahead of his election, and JD Vance walks into a supermarket… ouch.
