  • The Murderess Timney - The Last Public Female Execution in Scotland
News of the Times Episode 440 | 1862
In today’s episode it is 1862 Carsphairn Ireland, a small village some 14 miles from New Galloway.
27 year old Mary Timney, with four children, sees her neighbour, Ann Hannah, a 40 year old spinster who live in and cares for the house of her brothers. The Hannah family are more affluent. Ann also enjoys a good relationship with Mary’s husband. Mary knows that her husband’s attention has become diverted from her.
More than one spat has occurred between Mary and Ann with Ann having accused Mary of being a thief more than once.
And then one day, Mary snaps. The broken body of Ann, weltering in her own blood was considered exceptionally shocking at the time and made the national papers. Police energetically chase the trail of evidence to Mary. Then, as Mary can see her position is increasingly precarious, she confesses the unthinkable - that it was her own mother who had so horrifically murdered Ann.
We take a look at this sensation tale of the time. Mary Timney would become the last female ot be executed in Scotland.
For those who wish to dip their toes into the peculiar, our further particulars segment at the end of this episode looks at a creepy take from the same time period involving a cursed clock that seems to be fatal to each owner when it starts to slow down.

    Hosted by Robin Coles.
