Virginia, Charles, and a Naumian guide begin their journey through The Southern Woods of Earth Stars to the City of Gaal. While trekking through the forest, Virginia tries to provoke Charles to tell her more about himself, while he attempts to keep it a secret as best as he can.
Although most of her questions remain unanswered, Virginia wakes up early one morning and stumbles upon a secret that Charles has been hiding from her, along with a new evil that has been hunting them on their journey.

Virginia and Charles join the Chief and his tribe in a ceremonial feast dedicated in her honor. While there, the Naumian people chant a prophecy that had been passed down to them from generations past by Burning Eagle. After hearing it translated, Virginia discovers that the tribe refers to her as the one prophesied to return to them. What's more, the people begin to call her "Cohen," leading Virginia to worry that they believe she is Rose Cohen somehow returned to them.

Later, Virginia shares to Charles her past, the death of her parents, and her deepest fears since their passing, hoping if it is safe to share it with him.

Sitting at a campfire in the late evening, Virginia looks around in disbelief that she is actually in Alaythia, a place she swore just hours ago was nothing more than a fable. Forbidden to answer all of her questions, Charles assures her that she will have all of her questions answered in the city of refuge that he is taking her.
