  • Summary

  • The future of democracy is uncertain.

Populist world leaders are dominating headlines and creating a new kind of politics that challenges democratic values and the liberal order.

They influence the media, exert economic power, appoint judges, cultivate populism and seek to undermine the very institutions which brought them into power.

In this gripping narrative, Misha Glenny, journalist and best-selling author of McMafia, tells the stories of six strongmen's unexpected rise.

Outstanding. Full stop.

Insightful, engaging, and brilliantly written. Not a surprise from such a reputable reporter, of course. The firsthand accounts and interviews were well-chosen. I learned so much. Thank you.

Truthful and important

I'm a political scientist and I loved this podcast series. Misha Glenny is brilliant, those familiar with his other works, like McMafia know this. I guess I shouldn't have been surprised to see ignorant gullible idiots writing reviews calling this biased. What they actually mean is "This counters my unreasoning faith in Trump/Boris Johnson/Modi and I don't like being told that voting for authoritarian politicians threatens global democracy and liberty." Ignore those historically illiterate reviewers and listen to this series. It is in the self-interest of all humans who love democracy and the rule of law to listen to this podcast and learn from a man like Glenny who unequivocally from his early life experience, is an expert on democratically elected autocrats.

Great for a partisan view

Yeah, don’t come here if you wanted any attempt at balance in explaining the dynamics behind these “strong men.” Other than that, why not?

Fair and informative

This is an account of the rise of totalitarianism in the 21st century, from someone who has reported on it since the early rumblings in the 1990s.

It does not editorialize or speculate.

It may offend people whose fascist views have been normalized by cynical politicians that derive all of their political support from hate-mongering.

Excellent 6 Part Series

Very interesting. 6 well done episodes focussing on 6 contemporary leaders. I first heard of the series via an interview with Misha Glenny and then I quickly downloaded the series. Each episode stands alone, but it is even more interesting hearing the commonalities and traits of the various Iron Men together. Well written, produced and read. Time well spent. Thank you very much.

A very biased view on things

Has a lot of bias against any people or ideas that are of conservative values yet talks about it as if the information is facts rather than just their opinions. Should be open and upfront rather than pretending their view of the world is facts. This will cause people not willing to do their own research to miscommunicate the “facts” later on.

Extremist left wing propaganda at it's worst

If you like feeding of the fear based, liberal media machine, than this is for you. Do you need a boogyman to blame? This will give you one. Are you uncertain what to believe but you know without a doubt that white supremacy is to blame for everything? Than this is definitely for you.

Perfect for communist

Extreme leftist p propaganda. Completely biased. Presents opinions as facts if they fit the liberal white guilt narrative. Dangerously ignores the truth which could influence young viewers unable to do their own research
