Hey there, friends! It's time to catch up on some of the buzzworthy happenings in Monroe with your favorite Mayor, Burns. Over the past couple of weeks, we've seen exciting changes like the adoption of a new citizen-to-council committee model. This means your ideas will reach us even faster, and, oh, we now have permanent committees for Disabilities and Animal Welfare - a win for all!

If you're curious about council dynamics, let's just say the June 9th meeting wasn't short on drama! A debate sparked over immigration statements, and new positions on community safety made their way through—though they felt a bit redundant to be honest. Plus, there was quite the chatter after some wild rumors sprung up during the Latin Festival.

We had reason to cheer with the opening of the Levine Children's Emergency Room - seriously a huge leap for child safety in our town. And hey, let's not forget our popular youth fire department camp. If you blink, you'll miss sign-ups!

On the political horizon, House Bill 3 stunned us with proposals for partisan elections and extended council terms. While I was out for a wedding in Florida, I'm all for this transparency. Some exciting times ahead, and don't worry, my campaign is ready to rock!

Finally, a big thanks to our staff for an incredible budget presentation, even though tax hikes are never a delight. Remember, my promise to low taxes remains steadfast, because fiscal responsibility starts with us!

Until next time, stay engaged and keep Monroe strong!

Hey there, friends! This week in Monroe was all about celebrating new beginnings and cherishing timeless memories. We kicked things off by welcoming Dr. Stacey Waters-Bailey as the fresh face leading South Piedmont Community College. With a vision set to light up education and boost workforce development, she's definitely someone to keep an eye on!

It was also a time to cheer for our incredible high school seniors at Parkwood, Forest Hills, Union Academy, and Monroe High. From excited walkthroughs and field days to Monroe High’s downtown senior parade, the community beams with pride for these future leaders. Hats off to all our amazing grads!

A massive shoutout goes to our mentors and teachers who mold the minds of tomorrow with incredible dedication. Your hard work doesn’t go unnoticed, and we are endlessly grateful for everything you do!

Mayor Pro Tem David Dotson and I headed to a town hall in Waxhaw, standing firm against HB 765 alongside Representatives Dean Arp and David Willis. This bill poses a threat to municipal authority, folks, but Monroe, united and strong, is ready to uphold our local control.

In honoring the legacy of Chief Sutton, Monroe’s first black police chief, we dedicated a marker in his memory, ensuring his trailblazing service is never forgotten. This week, we also marked Memorial Day with solemn gratitude, paying tribute to those who sacrificed for our freedom; a reminder of the ultimate love and bravery.

That wraps it up for this week’s Mayor’s Minute. Let’s keep the spirit of Monroe strong! Don’t forget to stay connected through all platforms and consider supporting with a monthly donation. Cheers to building a better community together! 🌟
