The first is that Nathan and Dustin are starting a brand-new limited series podcast about the 1995 cult classic Showgirls from Paul Verhoeven where they’ll be discussing everything from Nomi’s bizarre diet to the insane sequel (yes, there’s a sequel) and everything in between. As we close up shop on Season 7, we could not leave without talking about arguably the biggest movie of 2023. With 7 Oscars and an unfathomable amount of other prestigious awards, Oppenheimer is a once in a lifetime opportunity (or Oppentunity, if you will.) Christopher Nolan has finally unleashed Cillian Murphy to his fullest potentials, and Nolan's directing capabilities and Murphy's acting powers are both truly staggering. While 2023 was an amazing year for films, there was none better than this cautionary tale about the horrors we face and the guilt we carry regarding nuclear war. Before Minus One got all the love and admiration it so rightfully deserved, there was another Godzilla movie not so long ago that really stomped its way into the hearts of millions. So after 180 episodes of the show, we're finally discussing the one, the only, the King of the Monsters (but not that movie.) We're of course talking about Godzilla, but not just any Godzilla movie; it's the 2016 masterclass in satire that is Shin Godzilla. What would it look like from a bureaucratic standpoint to actually try and stop a kaiju attack? This film shows exactly how it would (probably) go down. But that's not to say it doesn't have some incredibly shocking and horrific imagery that any kaiju lover would be sure to appreciate. So prepare your uniform and make sure your ramen doesn't get soggy as we talk about that truly wild face reveal of Gojira, plus the sensual world of commemorative popcorn buckets, the United States edging with its nuclear weapons, and creating a kaiju just for America. We're testing your might and maybe even your patience this week as we're back discussing video game adaptations (and yet another one from Paul W. S. Anderson) with the original Mortal Kombat from 1995. A film with some pretty great locations, art direction, and set dressing, which is honestly amazing considering all the scenery chewing going on in this movie. But a myriad of strange decisions like brainwashing the two best characters of the franchise into mindless zombies, casting a white dude to portray the Japanese God of Thunder, and tossing out "flawless victory’s” with total abandon make this a very sloppy movie at best and an absolute disaster at worst. So with that said, pack your bags, put on your $500 sunglasses (asshole), and board the dragon boat as we head to Outworld and discuss a whole plethora of topics like Western Union's outrageous telegram rates, Nathan's old band opening for Adema, Mortal Kombat being a thickly veiled metaphor for Scientology, and a hell of a lot more with returning guest JT Kelly.
