  • Lore of the Rings Interview » Why and How The Lord of the Rings is a "Religious and Catholic Work"
    Dec 21 2024
Listen to the whole episode: https://www.ringspodcast.com/190-why-and-how-the-lord-of-the-rings-is-a-religious-and-catholic-work/
    Hey there, fellow travellers!
Merry Christmas! I was recently a guest on the Lore of the Rings podcast - that's L-O-R-E - where I joined host Aaron to discuss the ways in which Lord of the Rings is a "fundamentally religous work".
    We uncovered:
    - The grace Faramir says before sharing a meal with Frodo and Sam.
    - The liturgical significance of March 25 — the day the One Ring was destroyed.
    - The mysterious Three Prayers of Númenor, preserved in Unfinished Tales.
    - Why Tolkien preferred absorbed symbolism over overt allegory.
I wanted to share a portion of this interview on The Tolkien Road's podcast feed, but you really need to go check out the whole thing over on Aaron's feed.

Featured Article: Elrond—A Lord of the Rings Character Guide

If you love J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings, then you know that all of the events of the story would be impossible without the half-Elf Elrond. Elrond, the Lord of Rivendell, lived in Middle-earth from the First Age to the beginning of the Fourth Age. It was with the help of Elrond that the evil Sauron was defeated and alliances were forged. Elrond is one of the most prominent characters throughout Tolkien's stories. But who is he and what is his story?

Calm down

Hi guys! I really enjoy your show. I’ve finally been able to follow along with the Silmarillion and looking to get back to those.

I’ve had a hard time with the shows geared around RoP. The amount of negativity towards timeline issues and basically everything else. There is a lot of good in the show too, so much that does stay true to Tolkien.

Literally the first thing I said when she mentioned Celeborn is “Oh good, John will be happy now” lol. But no, still complaining about them not having a daughter. There’s so many characters in this world and moving pieces, the storytellers do need to limit how many characters they add. I’m sure we will see him next season and she will get pregnant at the end of the show. It will be fine.

This is an awesome moment in time where we get to explore new places in Tolkiens world and this show has done an amazing job of that! Just enjoy it.

Longtime listener, finally able to leave a review

I've been a longtime listener, introduced first through Spotify. John and Greta do a great job bringing the works of Tolkien into podcast form and make a solid pair of presenters. When the show began, one of the hosts had written a book on Beren and Luthien; the other had almost no knowledge of Tolkien's works. As John and Greta journeyed through Tolkien's works, I (someone who's been reading Tolkien since I was 8) really appreciated the perspective Greta brought into the show. So many podcasts on Tolkien are just super fans; it was refreshing getting someone experiencing it all for the first time while being guided by someone of expert level. It would be foolish to think a podcast about Tolkien would not discuss religion at all, but I found this to always be more of a scholarly way of discussing it, and it's always been very level headed, anyone concerned about that should be at ease. It's been a wonderful 300 episodes and I'm thrilled to see what's to come. I'll end with a quote that I believe these two have followed pretty well. "If more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world." The road goes ever on indeed, and I'm glad to be on it.
