The True Review

By: Julian Letts-Gower & Bear Plantagenet
  • Summary

  • Theatre criticism is in a sad state, with the mainstream media parroting back the bleeding heart lefty pronouncements of Britain’s over-subsidised theatre industry.

Into the ruins of a once well-regarded profession step critics Julian Letts-Gower and Bear Plantagenet

No press accreditation but heaps of passion for the arts (Julian’s mother was the acclaimed ceramicist Petra Gower and Bear’s family established the English Theatre in Côte d’Azur). Julian and Bear are primed to provide true reviews, free from the woke left wing bias, to any productions willing to provide them with two complimentary tickets.

    Julian says:

‘For too long, the Fringe has been free from a genuine critical eye. The fawning media elite are clamouring to pour praise on those most detached from real life, common sense and British values. And at the other end, sycophantic bloggers toss out stars like they are going out of fashion. We want to bring attention to the best theatre by reviewing shows without an agenda. And we look forward to calling out the worst offenders of taste and decency, the Fringe clichés, and those spunking public money.’

    Bear says:

‘A last minute decision of my uncle to base himself in The Dominican Republic has gifted us a New Town flat for the month of August, our base for The True Review. We can’t wait to get our teeth into the Fringe. Lovely!’

The True Review will release new episodes each week, available on all major platforms.

Episodes
  • Nine Days in May, The Drag Caryl Churchill, The European Project
    Aug 15 2023

A third pass at picking the genius from the dross of Fringe shows sees Julian and Bear explore a show about Britain's General Strike which seems to have been tailor made for Owen Jones, a much-needed reinvigoration of Caryl Churchill plays by a drag troupe, and an epic one man show about the history of the EU (spoiler|: it doesn't end well).

Those are: Nine Days in May by Graham James, The Drag Caryl Churchill, and The European Project.

Julian and Bear will also be exploring the 'theme' of the Fringe this year - artificial intelligence. And there's a couple of emails of feedback from the woke brigade.
